First and foremost. Knives are not meant for prying. Secondly, I have several S&W knives that I really like, so this is not a negative for the whole line.
That said, please continue.

I got this knife for free a while back, and it's been sitting on a shelf ever since. As I was walking out to the yard to relax and take in the evening, I figured I'd play with it a bit. The scales are made from some kind of hard plastic, so I thought I'd do some light prying on a half-rotted log to see how they held up to it. The good news: the scales did fine. The bad news: the blade didn't.

I stuck the tip into a crevice and pryed lightly. Off it went. Oh, well. I stuck the rest of the blade in and pryed lightly. It snapped like a twig.

S&W is NOT known for quality knives.

Yeah, it seems I've heard that a couple of times. :)

They do make some good ones though. They are made in different factories to different specs. The HRT (Darrel Ralph) stuff is good. The S&R stuff is good. I actually really like the SWAT line. All of the Bullseye stuff I've seen so far was pretty crappy.

Wow. I have 3 S&Ws - 2 Special Tacticals and one big Extreme Ops. They're my dirty work knives. I haven't run into any of this, though. But then again, I haven't put it through such stress.

Hee hee. One time my coworkers and I tried playing around with one of the HRT daggers to see if they could throw well at all (even though they're light). Just throwing it at a dart board on the floor caused the tip to bend a bit despite it being a light throw. Then when we tried to gently bend the minimal set in the blade back to true and the thing snapped like glass! But then again it isn't their performance that attracts people, it's that they're, well...cheap.

I must admit, however, that Taylor did step it up a notch this year.

Eh, just broke another one trying to dig a bullet out of a log. Tip snapped. The blade now has play, and is scraping the frame when closing.

Given I paid a grand total of $3 for this knife, but I actually liked it. :grumpy:

I bought a S&W little folder. Never got a chance to use it. It fell apart and is unuseable just because I opened and closed it a lot.

The models seem to be pretty much all over the map in terms of quality, though some of their newer examples are actually nice--for a cheapie knife. Not bad, and they have their place but that place isn't in my pocket. :D
