Anybody have experience with the Smith combat/survival HRTDR? A search turns up no info. I've traded with a buddy for awhile, and he wants to trade permanent for my Nighthawk. Seems like I'd get the better end of the deal, pricewise anyway. 440C and a form fitted kydex multi position sheath is about all I know. I think I'm looking a gift horse in the mouth. Thanks.

I haven't used mine but nicely made. Buying a Darryl Ralph Echelon - the knife upon which this one is modeled - would set you back 5 or 6 times this amount of money. A very stout combat knife and one of the very few quality production recurves available. Dont hesitate.
TOPS could take a pricing lesson from S&W on this one - what with the Rinaldi they are offering priced within $150.00 of the real thing.
I wouldn't be surprised if at some point S&W (Taylor) discontinues this model or adjusts the price upward to reflect better the quality of this piece.

I would not hesitate to trade and I’ve got both the Nighthawk and the HRT. Even after reprofiling the edge (one of the older models) the Nighthawk never really worked for me, even if I like its look and feel. Blade too thick for most cutting jobs and not right for chopping either. The HRT has got excellent blade- and edge geometry and it came very, very sharp. I haven’t used it much, but I’m quite sure it is a very good chopper. The quality is impressive for the price and the sheath is ok.

Regards Jan

Thanks guys! I just got off the phone and the deal is complete. He said his motivation was the black blade and the regular sheath. He has the box and paperwork too. The Nighthawk was sweet, and he definately gets the better warranty, but I'm very pleased. Has the satin blade and lockup is tight in the sheath. I gotta get out on the north 40 this week and do a side by side with the A1. Glockman, thanks for the link. My search didn't turn it up. I noticed before that our knife tastes parallel.

I received my S&W HTR(DR) earlier this morning, and I am VERY impressed with this knife!...What an excellent "fighter/combat knife"! This one just "feels RIGHT" in my hand, and it looks like it would do a very good job of defending my bacon should the need arise.

The sheath could be alittle thicker/heavier, but it works just fine...(I put an IWB belt-loop in it.).

After some field use I like mine a lot. It is heavier than I like, but a good chopper with the balance point just forward of the forefinger. Things I'd change are: 1) Skeletonize the tang 2) Thicken the width and reduce the depth of the handle 3) Sharpen the edge all the way down, or put in a finger choil. Good knife, good bargain. Oh yeah, ditch the cheesy aluminum sleeves that attach the belt loop to the sheath.

Folks,

Whilst I was at my local shop buying my S30V military, I also procured a S&W HRTDR. Man, is this ever an impressive blade.

Ho-de-smo!

I can't wait to chop something, like dead, pesky tree branches or something.

Oozing with excitement, Jeff/1911. :p

...Just don't go chasing one of those big old Canadian bears through the woods with your new HRTDR, (eventho' it does look to be a good bear-killing knife)...:D.:D.
