I just ordered a S&W magnesium handle HRT folder. I know most around here are not big S&W fans, but this knife usually sells for around $50. It is a custom design by Darrel Ralph, and uses 440C for blade steel. So, when I saw them in combo edge at Smoky Mountain Knifeworks for only $8.99, I had to order. The plain edge is the regular price, have no idea why. Does anyone have experinece with this knife? The design and size looks good, and 440C is fine with me. I am not sure about magnesium. It also has "flippers" like the Cuda maxx, or CS Ti-lite for fast opening. Anyone else going to get one?
If there is interest, I'll post a review when it arrives. I don't know if a link is allowed, but it's on the SMKW website.

I have several different models of the S&W knives. These all have 440C steel blades, titanium or aluminum handles, good liner locks. I find them well built with good edge holding ability.

I think they are a great deal for the money. I really wasn't expecting anything but a pretty face for the price. I was pleasantly surprised by what I ended up with, way beyond my expectations. I haven't used one of their "assisted" knives so am looking forward to your review.

However, they also sell some other models with 420 or 440A steel that I don't think much of. That seems to be the problem with S&W knives. Their product line doesn't have consistent quality. If you are a half-way knowledgeable knife knut you can find some truly great deals. If not, you could possibly be disappointed. I have found the same situation with with CRKT knives. Some are awesome quality and price, other are ugh! Sometimes these inexpensive knives don't come real sharp from the factory. This lack of sharpness will cause new users to dismiss them as crummy. However, with a touch on the old sharpener they achieve a very good cutting edge. For $10 I'll happily spend five minutes with my sharpener to put a wicked edge on the blade.

Ironman,

Are you unsure as to whether the knife's Magnesium handle is flammable? IIRC, that black coating on the Magnesium scales does something to neutralize any possibility of the scales suddenly lighting up on you. That would really suck to be walking along, accidentally bump something metallic and edgy then suddenly have a Magnesium fire in your pants.:D :D :D The scales are stable according to Taylor Cutlery.
The handle is kind of compact to me, but has just enough for me to get a decent grip on it.
I thought the edge was kind of thick so I thinned it down some and it works good. The lock up on mine is solid and passed a spine whack test.

Enjoy!

I bought one of these magnesium S&Ws to check it out. Paid 6.97 at an auction.

It was so poorly constructed, especially at the pivot, that I threw it in the garbage within an hour of receiving it.
