Several years ago I bought a number of these knives to give away. They were built to sell at a higher price and the quality was much better than most S&W knives. Still, they were selling for about five bucks from SMKWs.

I've been pleasantly surprised by some of S&W's knives. I've seen some pretty crummy S&W entries, but I've also seen some sleepers, and the Magnesium model is one in my view.

The downside, of course, is that the blade has serrations. But aside from that I've been carrying this knife for several weeks and I'm astounded that I like it as much as I do. I don't know what the significance is of the handle being magnesium (it feels like plastic). It rides well behind the waist band and the blade maintains a good, sharp edge. Of course the newer knives of the same model don't have magnesium handles nor do they have the smooth operation of the first Magnesium models (alas!).

Does anyone else have experience with this knife? I'm just curious as that it has a je ne se quoi quality about it that I like. The first models are clearly better than the subsequent models. But the hilt handles make it a nice EDC.

Magnesium is very light , more so than aluminum. Obviously the knife has a coating of some type to protect from corrosion.

Cool, thanks for the exposure. FYI there is a plain edge version available, at least on knifecenter.

Yes. I'd prefer the plain edge. I just haven't bought any. Thanks.Yes. I'd prefer the plain edge. I just haven't bought any. Thanks.

Interesting. It is extremely light indeed as mete says.

It's also highly inflammable, at least when shaved into thin strips or ground into powder. (Blocks of it are quite safe, won't go up from a spark or anything like that.) It's used in a lot of fire starting devices.

In it's pure form it's very soft as metals go, I wonder if the handles are alloys of it...
