S&W/Taylor Cutlery Darrel Ralph Pics!!

As much as I like Darrells stuff, and even if you did happen to get a decent example of Smith & Wessons works (gotta be rare) I wouldnt have a knife from S&W/Taylor if it was free. Im sorry to see that for whatever reason they have a DDR design. They have proven themselves to be rip-off artists and creators of world class pieces of crap.

Hey Dex, thanks for the pics. The folder looks pretty good as does the fixed blade but I think I will stick to my custom Mad Max for now. Maybe I'll buy a few to give to my friends that say,"You gave how much for this think?" when I show them the Max. Some people would like these just as much as I like mine. Can't wait for Blade!

I, too, have been boycotting Smith & Wesson licensed products since their collaboration with the Clinton Administration. But with the Clinton administration gone, and if ownership of the company has changed, it might be time to rethink that boycott.

However, that doesn't change the fact that Taylor Cutlery's products are of inferior quality to other knives in the same price range. Taylor's blatant ripoffs of others' designs don't sit well with me, either. Darrel's work is excellent, and I don't fault him for working with Taylor, but I don't know if it's a company I wish to support.

I still can't get over seeing that ad for the first time. I just knew Taylor had ripped DDR.
Of course I am happy to find out I was wrong. The front end of that knife is so distinctive that it just grabs your attention.

I am sitting here and comparing my new MADD MAXX Jr. to the Taylor knife and the front is almost identical. Course that is all that is identical!

Dex, how does the knife feel in your hand? Is it a thick handle? Any idea as to why magnesium was used? What is the overall length? Are there really 24 hrs in a day? How long does it take a gnat to fly across town? Is there really a man in the moon? These questions and others have bugged me for several hours now. Hope you can shed some light!

Razor, S&W has been purchased by an American company that says will honor the UN-American deal S&W made with the Clinton/Reno cartel.

They can stuff their firearms and other licensed junk - sideways.

The parent company of S&W proper (the firearms manufacturer), Tomkins PLC, made a dirty deal with the USDOJ. They recently sold the company to Saf-T-Hammer.

Besides manufacturing firearms, S&W also licenses the use of it's name and logo to manufacturers of apparel, tools, and other sporting goods. They license the S&W name to Taylor for knives.

What I'm saying is, aside from the fact that Taylor has a history of ripoffs, I will not buy anything, made by anyone, that bears the S&W name.

I respect DDR, but wish he and other makers would choose their collaborators more carefully.

DDR made a post a few weeks ago about why he is collaobrating with Taylor. Basically, the gist of it was he wanted to get his money from Taylor, this stemming from the company's blatant rip off of his Krait neck knife. Knifemaking's a business and DDR just needs to get his money from the company, fair and square

So that's how this recent collaboration came about. Objectively speaking, these collaboration knives are well made (though they bear the S&W name on them

). A highly respected maker like DDR certainly won't align himself with a manufacturer that puts out crap. FWIW Taylor has stuff made in Taiwan a la CRKT.

Pretty sad situation. Unless he's getting at least double what he deserves for this design, he's not getting his money back at all, just getting paid for this new work and still getting nothing for the design they stole in the first place. Still, I can understand thinking he's got to get something out of them, it just sucks that the only way to do that is to offer something in return. Pretty crappy when an artist like Mr. Ralph can't simply demand his due.

As for Smith and Wesson and Saf-T-Hammer, watch for something strange in this case. That deal doesn't smell right. A few days after the deal was concluded the president of Saf-T-Hammer was still saying that they were reading the agreement to see what was in it, but whatever it was, they would follow it.
What? Who makes a multi-million dollar purchase without checking into the biggest liability the company has?

I'm not a finance expert but it sounds like someone who doesn't care because he knows he's not really the one purchasing the company. He's somebody's public face and they're the ones who will have to deal with the agreement and the monstrous debt at S&W.

This is a story I've heard from several knifemakers, and the main reason I won't buy from Taylor. Yes, Taylor's quality is an issue, and yes, the S&W name rings alarm bells now. But ripping off custom designs has real impact personally to the knifemakers who are churning out the fodder for our hobby. And that's the best reason of all to stay away from them, IMO.
