S&W Taylor Cutlery knives?

I have seen extremely low prices at knife shows lately for these - has the quality suffered? Seems like every dealer has a "1 for $10 or 2 for $18" special on these folders. Any opinions on them as decent working knives?

I personally feel that their stuff IS junk, and would NOT waste one cent of my money on their stuff.

I wouldn't take one for free.
I would rather get a good solid knife of high quality for a little more $.
Byrds are less than $20.

I found a S&W Urban Camo titanium coated 440C steel blade liner lock for a bargain basement price and bought it just to see if they were as lousy as everyone claims. I use it as a beater around the shop and other than an occasional sharpening it has been a good knife. I like the shape and urban camo finish.

It sort of reminds me of my Boker AK74 knife. About the same size and feel.

I also wanted to check them out, bought one (folder) $81.00 MSRP for $5.51. Arrived via USPS. 10 minutes after opening the package, it was in the garbage, which was the most obvious place for it to be.

Hmm. Only one post "for" and the rest "against". Are you guys only against the recent Taylor Cutlery S&W's or all the S&W's? I, too purchased a SWAT folder like the one above DGG mentions, and it has been a great knife the last couple of years.

I had 2 or 3 in the beginning and although I only palyed with them alot they never not once just fell apart

I personally would NOT waste ANY of MY money on ANY S&W knife! But that is just me.

Junk Is Junk...

The only S&W knife I've tried was so-so. No real complaints. Couldn't make the lock fail, 440C, pivot could be tightened down. Not stellar in any way.

For the money, it's just fine. Byrds are a better choice, though.

Byrds are a sub-division of Spyderco. They are imported from China. Think of them as high quality, lower cost Spyderco's.

Not familiar with those - is that a brand, or model?

I believe he meant the Spyderco "Byrd" line, the low-priced models of Spyderco. I'd also second them.

I had a S&W SWAT model for five years but I only bought it then since they looked "cool" at the time and I really didn't know much about knives then as I do now. If you buy one simply as a "beater" with little regard for function, that's Ok I suppose. From my experience though, as the others said, there are better ones out there set at a low price point.

This one isn't bad at all, but I did polish it and make it "waved"-its a SW3500 Framelock I picked up for $20 and it serves me well

That is the exact one (without the custimization) that I bought a few years back and has been a good knife - I was concerned the newer ones that are so cheap (that one cost me about $25) and listed on the box or blade as "Taylor Cutlery" were sub-standard. Have they always been mede by Taylor?
