Hi everybody! I would like to buy a knife to carry in my backpack for 'survival',camping and everyday chores, something of a workhorse. I love the S1 and F1 and their steel (VG-10)but I have heard great things about the swamp rats, mainly the Howling rat... and the Brandicoot does not seem bad either. Any advice? Thanks in advance

I have an S1 and a Bandicoot (actually an INFI Coot).

I like the handle on the Coot better, it fits my hand well and is very grippy. The blade geometry also fits my purposes a little more than the S1's.

In the end I think it would come down to holding each knife and seeing which felt better in your hand. They are both nice, both nearly indestructible, both great users. The Swamp Rat might be a little tougher and the Fallkniven more stainless, but the difference probably isn't enough to worry too much about.

The Fallkniven blades are VG-10 stainless and will resist surface rusting better, and also have an extended tang for hammering on or with. So if you need either of those aspects Fallkniven would be a better choice, in most other respects the Swamp Rat lines are better performers.

i have a f1, Bandicoot, howling rat and camp tramp

All are great knives. The handles and the rats are more comfortable.
You may want to wait for Swamp Rats new D2 blades to come out, sweet looking knives from what i've seen.

Do not know about the others but am very happy with the Swamp Rat. The handle is softer and allows me a better grip and more time with out fatigue.

:p Go for the Fallkniven S1 or F1!
Laminated VG-10 steel blades with Teflon coated surfaces and with Kydex sheaths makes the best knives available(in my opininon at least). I have a F1 with Teflon coating and a kydex sheath and it´s the best and most versatile knife that i have. For fishing, hunting and camping it´s superb. The F1 has a 4 inch blade that maybe is to short for your needs, but the S1 is larger with it´s 5 inch blade might suit you better. The VG-10 stainless steel holds the edge long, takes a razor edge and is fairly easy to resharpen. So far i have not seen a single rust spot on my F1.

Just got a F-1...looks like a great knife, good steel, good grip great sheath, good price! My guess is that eventually you'll need to get a SRK too!
