S110V Hardness?

Looking for a little recommendation as to the hardness you guys would like to see on S110V. This is my first time using it as a "one-off" for a customer and I have no wiggle room to experiment. This is some tough stuff to work with for sure, eats belts and saw blades as a quick snack. 220 on it so far. I'll bring it up to 400 before I send it out to Peter's.

63 Rc sound about right?

I talked to Brad at Peters for a folding blade as well and he recommended 61-62 for S110v. He based this on the fact that higher hardness makes it very very difficult to sharpen.
 
I think that either Cliff Stamp or Jim Ankerson would also be good folks for that question. Of course, it's foolish to argue with Brad at Peters.

Looking at Ankerson's notes, I see several knives that he tested with s110V...as follows..
Steel - # of cuts - Model - HRC Hardness - Geometry Measurement
S110V - 1120 - Manix 2 - 62 RC - Regrind to .005" behind the edge.
S110V - 720 - Manix 2 - 62 RC
S110V - 600 - Mule - 60 RC - .015" -.018" behind the edge.

At the Crucible site, (the bar graph showing The abrasive wear resistance of CPM S110V at various hardness), you see that the wear resistance increases by about 30% as the HRC goes from 60 to 63, although the corrosion resistance is somewhat reduced at the higher hardness.

Following a list of typical applications, which includes industrial knives, the Crucible site indicates "Typical Application Hardness: 58/61 HRC."

I would stay between 60 and 61. It can be maybe a point harder, but you have to ask if that would make for any gain that on a folder.
 
Thanks guys, I appreciation the feedback! I've based the 63 Rc mostly off of what I had read in Ankerson's testing of Phil Wilson's knife at 63-64 Rc and what was going on over at Spyderco. The customer also said he wanted me to lean toward the hard side. From what you guys are saying, I believe, is 62 is already pushing it but I'd hate to leave any of this steels potential strengths on the table, so to speak.

Anyone else?

I have a S110V knife from Phil Wilson @63 rc. It is in the sweet spot for edge holding before it goes into the brittle range.
 
Thanks waterstone. Did you ever chip it?

The knife is .005" behind cutting edge and never chipped on me but is a dedicated slicer. The knife wouldn't hold up to any chopping/battoning. I think 63 would be fine for a folder as long as it's not advertised as hard use. IMO
