Looking for feedback on S30-V performance as a fixed blade. What is your S30-V fixed blade, how do you like it,and what angle do you sharpen it at?

It all depends on heat treat, grind, edge bevel, etc. For a standard heat treat, I feel that S30V is more than strong enough for proper knife tasks. Can you pound it with a steel hammer when it has been in the freezer all night through an I beam, no. There are just a lot of variables that will affect it. If it is around the 6" mark and a standard 20-25 degree full flat grind or sabre grind with a 20 degree or maybe even 15 degree edge bevel, it should work fine. I have heard some tell of chipping. Just stay away form stones and such and you'll be fine on that. Just make sure you get it from a respectable maker who knows how to heat treat

I have a Gerber Yari II tanto that I've been using for a little while for general all-around camp chores. It's not an overly large knife, with around a 5" blade made of thin stock. I don't baton with it or do much in the line of abusive stuff, but it's held up just fine. S30V is not my favourite steel, but it's been completely suitable as far as this blade is concerned. I have it sharpened at around a 20ish degree angle per side.

5.5" CRK Green Beret. I don't use it often but I have thumped on it a bit, worked out fine. Also pretty good for general camp tasks despite its appearances. Sharpen it somewhere around 40 degrees inclusive.

I have two custom fixed blades in CPM S30V.

One a 4.5" blade at around 59 Rc, the other a 8.5" blade run a point or two higher.

They both feature convex edges and have handled all that I could throw at them.

Though, I must add, the larger blade had flat secondary bevels when I purchased it secondhand, and showed some chipping. As a result I got a great deal on this knife, and since re-profiling to a convex edge I have had great edge retention without any chipping issues.

Personally, I think S30V is a great steel for a stainless fixed blade.

The reason I am seeking feedback is, I have a Sog Field knife 59RC the blade is 5 3/8s.I reprofiled the blade to 30 degrees convex grind.I have been debating on making it a user, selling it or just boxing it up and putting back int the tool box.

I cut a piece of pvc pipe at a 15 degree angle to make 30 degree's inclusive. Then wrapped a piece of leather around the pipe, then attached wet/dry sandpaper to the leather. Then holding the pipe with the angled cut flat against my coffee table top I used vertical strokes to sharpen. The leather backing had just enough give to convex the edge of the blade.
