i was just put on a new edge/sharpening my buck vantage pro (S30V, Paul Bos heat treat). i used my norton 1000 grit water stone and i sharpened the edge freehand (as i always do). i decided to look at the edge with my usb microscope. the microscope is rated at 20x-400x. the first pic is around 20x-40x, the second pic is around 350x-375x.

p.s. if get a chance, i'll pull out my king 6000 grit waterstone and polish the edge (and take pics).

i broke out my old 6000 grit king stone (i think it's time for a new one ;)).

here are the pics:

p.s. i should probably spend another 5 minutes working the edge with the 6000 but if i were to do that, i would probably first run the edge on my 1200 grit knig stone (which i think is finer than the norton 1000). then i would go back to the 6000.

Cool pics, Jim!

I looked at the edge at first before reading your post and thought, "Hey, that looks like the finish on my Kulgera in S30V." Same stone wouldn't ya know it! Looks exactly like that picture under my 30x. Kind of cool to see that...

Also, makes me think I'm stropping way too much. After about 1000 srokes per side on CrO I've had finishes equal or better than the results from the King you posted.

What do you flatten your Norton on?

thanks man.

i flatten my stones with a fairly inexpensive diamond block. because the norton is harder and the particles don't fall off as fast as with my king stones, i don't flatten it as often. i flatten my king stones (not the 6000) after every time i use them. my 1000 norton does a pretty good job of cutting, but not as fast as my 800 or 1200 king stones (but sometimes i prefer a slower cut/harder stone).

i might get into stropping. i was just thinking about building my own stropping rig. i have to do more research (probably on straight saving razor forums).

i decided to try my king 800 grit stone. here are the pics with a piece of fine hair for some prospective:

i pulled out my combination arkansas stone, i did the edge on the fine side (after the 800 grit king stone).

im probably going to leave the knife at this finish (for now), i like how the edge feels and cuts. the next time i have to sharpen the knife i'll probably go from the fine arkansas to the 6000 king.

Interesting. I figured the grain size would be finer. You can really see the grind lines at 200x, can't you! Just a recommendation, put the magnification in the photo next to the time/date.

the magnification is manually adjusted with a focusing wheel. the scope is rated at 20x - 400x. based on that, the pics im taking are 30x-50x for low power shots and 375x for the high powered shots.

So what kind of scope did you pick up anyway? I've been thinking about getting one.

I like the hair as perspective. With my 30x loupe if I put my hair up to the edge, the hair looks a lot more narrow compared to the thickness of the hair.

I have the same scope, almost. Mine is rated 20x & 200X. Here's a shot of my EDC at 200x. It feels sharp, but looking through the scope shows some nasty pitting. Time to get it resharpened.

im going to take out my 6000 grit now and try to polish the edge (get rid of the fine scratches).

.

^ your welcome.

so far i went from the 1200 grit king stone to the 6000. then i made a ghetto, old-school strop set-up using a yellow legal note pad and i rubbed it with ryobi white compound (2-5 micron). i did 10 strokes per side (7 times each side = 140 total strokes), then i stropped the edge on printed newspaper (10 strokes per side (2 times each = 40 total stroke ).

p.s. most of my forearm hair is missing because i keep testing how the knife shaves, it's doing a pretty wicked job :).
