S30V for a hunting knife

My apologies if this has been asked before.

A client of mine wanted to know how suitable S30V would be for a knife that will be used almost exclusively for hunting. He did mention that he might want to do some light wood chopping (clearing shooting lanes), which caused me to think that something like 440C or ATS 34 might work better.

Any comments/options?

Thanks in advance!

I think S30V would be awesome for a hunting/woods knife...of course, it depends on the HT...

Yeah - HT would be done by either Peter's or Paul Bos, so that won't be a problem, I think.

Great choice for this use.

CPMS30V - properly heat treated should outperform either 440C or ATS34 in the areas of corrosion resistance, transverse toughness (chipping resistance) and edge retention. It's only drawback is difficulty in producing a mirror finish.

It's ability to increase antler size once an animal is on the ground is almost exactly equal to the other two.:D

I'm pretty sure early reports about problems with chipping have been settled by the HT pros. Both those companies know what they're doing

I say go for it.

I actually decided to go with CPM 154CM based on a number of reviews and specs I read.

Thanks in any case for the replies everyone!
