S30V not coming back sharp from CRK spa

So i recently received my large sebenza 21 back from CRK. I had sent it in to get all silver hardware, double thumb lugs, a clip insert, and new washers. Overall i am very happy with how the knife came back, it looks great. The one thing that was a little bit of a letdown was that it was not that sharp, the main bevel looks nice and polished though, but the actual cutting edge is not that sharp, not a huge deal since i touched it up on the sharpmaker and now it is nice and sharp.

I just would expect CRK to do better. I wonder if they are not putting as much time and effort on S30V blades because i heard it wears out their belts faster than S35VN. This is the second knife I've sent for work, the first was an Umnumzaan also with S30V and that one also came back to me not very sharp.

I still like CRK very much, they are my favorite knife brand. Overall i was very happy with the work they did, but they could work on their sharpening.

Here's the knife i got back.

Nice Knife. I don't think that wearing out the belts faster for S30V would enter into their thinking.

Your're probably right, but maybe they put the same enough amount of sharpening time on it as S35VN, which in my experience gets sharp faster, so maybe that's the issue that they are not putting in the amount of time it requires to get sharp. This would be really annoying though, if the main reason someone sent it in was to get it sharpened and then to get it back not very sharp.

You're absolutely right, but I don't think that's likely. My guess is that somebody just missed it and I'm sure they'll make it right if you ask them to.

I'm sure they would make it sharp, but I wouldn't want to be without the knife again for like a month. I made it sharp with the sharpmaker anyway. My message is just to inform CRK to check they make the knives properly sharp.

I wouldn't get too carried away making assumptions about why the knife was returned dull. The differences between s30v and s35vn are so minute that on a blade by blade basis it is of no concern. The individual conditions of the edge and other concerns are surely more important when evaluating a blade for sharpening.
Maybe shoot CRK a nicely worded email about your concerns or perhaps send them a bill for your time spent re-sharpening? :p

Be thankful you have the skills to save yourself from a dull knife. ;)

I have sent some into CRK over the years and all came back razor sharp. My umnumzaan was so sharp, upon opening up the zaan from its return to me, I opened up a blister pack with a maglight in it and cut my thumb at the base shortly after. I should have gotten stitches, but just bandaged it up. Took 6 weeks to heal as it kept opening up from bending it. I have a nice 1/2" scare there to remind that CRK returns their knives from the spa Very Sharp.

I bought other new CRK and they were pretty sharp. My new 25 sebenza I got last week was not as sharp as others, but like you, a short while on the sharpmaker and its hair shaving sharp using just the ultra fine rods. It was sharp, just not as sharp as others I have had. No Biggie at all.
