Hey fellas,

What are is the comparison between these two versions? I'm gonna get one or the other but which one???

Thanks

I haven't tried Buck's take on S30V, I don't like coated blades, but the BG-42 is awesome stuff. I like it better than the S30V I've gotten from other companies.

I have two BG-42 blades from Buck, and two S30V blades from Buck. They are close enough in performance that you would probably not notice a difference in day to day use. In my experience, the BG-42 has a slight advantage in edgeholding, and the S30V is a little easier to sharpen. YMMV.

The new angle that Buck is putting on the 110 and others should make it cut better and be easier to sharpen, I almost bought one today at the mall.

I replaced my grandfather's old user 110 with a new 110 that I had upgraded with a BG-42 blade. Huge difference in edge holding, I'm almost positive that his old one was 420HC and it doesn't hold a candle to BG-42. He uses his knives pretty hard and his biggest complaint was how he had to constantly sharpen his old knife, not any more! LoL! I love BG-42 steel, I wish more models were offered with it. That’s not to say that S30V isn’t good, in fact I have quite a few knives with that steel, I just feel that BG-42 is just a little better. My favorite steels, ZDP-189, BG-42, and S30V. Imagine a ZDP 110, man that would be one awesome knife!!! Just my $.02 .

My daily carry is a 110FG that was re-bladed with BG-42. It is simply awesome! I have other knives in D2, M2, etc. The BG-42 is my favorite (but the M2 is growing on me). I think BG-42 is the best for a stainless blade, at least for me.

As was stated, I probably could not tell the difference in the 2 steels from day to day use.
I do know that the majority of custom knife buyers/collectors, strongly prefer BG42.

Thanks all,

I also saw that Bass Pro has a 110 in 154CPM!

I brought this one up and looked at it. I wonder if that is a coated blade?
Price seemed in line with the Alaskan 110.. If it will sharpen up a little easier, I will grab one.

Silly me, I will grab one anyway...

Maybe if you begin a new thread indicating what it is you're trying to find out rather then hijack every existing thread here on the Buck forum someone may actually answer your question.

Start a new thread asking for the information that you want. Dont post something in a existing thread that has nothing to do with your post.

So start a new thread mate and then the info I am sure will be forthcoming.

S30V is a little easier to sharpen. Personally, I would go with it ( I have the cabelas alaskan 110 in S30V). Although, both blades are going to be performers, so it's a matter of personal preference.

I find that S30V sharpens fairly easily, and is easy to strop back into shape , and a great edge holder! But thats just me ;)
