S30V Question

Benchmade Bugout is pretty thin, but not crazy thin. If you can track down one of the Spyderco Chaparals that were done in S30, that would be a really good thin option.

There are also the S30V sprint run Delicas that are about to be released. That would be a really good thin option in S30.

Define thin... that's a pretty vague question.

I did say very : P but um I didn't have specific dimensions in mind, I was thinking it might perform better as a thin slicer due to it's fine grain structure like a sak width maybe, but now that I'm thinking about it maybe changing the edge geometry to be more narrow would be a way to test

But thin isn't everything. The pm2 is a little thicker bjt is such a good slicer because of edge geometry and grind. my benchmade valet is very thin blade stock but does not slice as well as my 940-1. The 940-1 has a taller blade so it tapers down to the edge more gradually. So to sum up, consider not only blade thickness but overall geometry and grind.

My experience with it's slicing capabilities so far have been poor, I think since it is does have such a fine grain structure it doesn't seem to bite into whatever I'm trying to slice without exerting (imo) excess pressure, so I'm thinking that by trying a thinner blade stock and or a steeper blade angle may make this steel perform better

I disagree about fine grain structure and not biting in. Check out this cutting test video i made with sage 3 by spyderco in s30v. it did better than delica and zt 0450 and it really bit into the rope.

You have to press otherwise it wont go through such a touch rope, but compare that with my zt 0450 and delica cut test if you want to see what pressing really looks like. this required so little pressing relative to the other 3 knives i tested

Check out Phil Wilson. He makes some very thin knives in s30v and various other super steel. Possibly one of the best heat treatment guys in the industry.

If you really have to have a steel bite, then the best i can think of is for you getting a spyderco natove in s90v, or the benchmade arcane. the arcane is super thin and super slicey, plus it has the agressive chainsaw like s90v.

What edge grind angle are you currently using?

What are you slicing?

What current knife in S30V are you using?

You might find more thin stock options in smaller knives: 2.5-3.25". BHQ lists the Delica, Stretch, Manix 2, and PM2 as .09, .12, .13, and .14 respectively.

I have a nice thin BM 490 at 0.9, but it's in s90v. The BM 535 is listed as 0.9 and s30v.
