Got caught in the rain yesterday. My S30V seb was in my pocket. I knew I would need to clean it asap. After being rained on for about 5 mins, I got home and took everything outta my pocket, changed, cleaned up (took about 10 mins) and grabbed my knife....

RUST!!!

There were about SIX one millimeter sized rust spots on the blade and a blob of rust in the pivot area!!!

What I can't believe is that I've gotten my BG42 seb wet a dozen times and waited hours to clean it with no rust. I must say that I'm not thrilled with this.

Any other wet sebenza experiences?

Yep – no problem with BG42!

My Large SeBenZa has been wet many times with no problems.
What do you use for cleaning?
I use Break Free.

I was using tough cloth, but since I like to use my seb for everything including food, I try to stay away from chemicals. I just try to keep the blade clean. usually workd fine... Any ideas???

Hi Archieblue

I prefer Ballistol.
It works well and it is not toxic. In germany it is permissible for using in the food-industrie.

regards

PS: please excuse my bad english

Ballistol's nice too. Most black powder shooters in CAS (at least in my region) douse their guns in ballistol

Prompt and appropriate attention will usually save the day, but i wish they would go back to BG-42. I have a large and a small in BG-42 and am not looking to switch.

Despite the seemingly negative attitude of my post, S30V is an OK steel and it's not like the steeel is bad - I just prefer BG-42. If Chris made knives out of %*^#*G*%(&, I would think it to be good!

The rust came off for the most part, but there is still a trace of it. I clean my sebenza EVERY TIME I use it. I take it apart and clean it at least once a month... To clean the rust off, I used "Flitz" to try and polish it off, which worked OK. There is definately room for improvement. Maybe I should try something more aggressive like a scotch brite pad or something. Any ideas?

Archie, I would send it back to CRK. One of the atributes of S30V is supposed to be very stain resistant. I think that Chris would like to know if that isn't the case. Sounds like you take pretty good care of your knives.

I hate rust!
Just found a couple spots on the tip of my S30V Sebbie over the weekend. I hadn't carried it for a couple months, had it put away for the summer. I polished them out with a cloth and a spot of Flitz. Now I'm going to have to disassemble it and look for any spots elsewhere on the blade:mad:

What happened to S30V as a wonder, high-carbon, stain-resistant steel?

Yeah, I have found a little surface rust on my new seb blade also.
However it comes off very easily with any polishing paste, quickly.
It seems to fair better than ATS-34. Just check it every few days and you should be good.

RUST ON S30V

YUP!

I have 4 or 5 blades with S30V from different makers including a sebbie. Several are EDC knives used for fishing and hiking. Most at one one or another have had problems with rust.

I´ve not had any pitting, but rust seems to develop quickly on S30V. I use 800 grit SiC and an oily rag with light pressure to remove the rust and stain.

One S30V blade that has a bead blasted finish seems to take rust faster...
