I've got a S30V knife (the surefire delta, $420 knife) and kinda need to sharpen it already but haven't done it ever before.
So decided to first ask for an advise of how to do it right, the first time, for this particular steel.
Recommendation/links for the specific tools i will need, will be appreciated as well! :)

Thank you!

If you have a Sharpmaker it's easy just to sharpen it....

What do you use currently?

You should get a sharpmaker. Also you might have overpayed for s30v:eek: Try a buck vantage pro next time (Its 50 bucks)

If you can free-hand sharpen, it doesn't take much more than some appropriately chosen stones.

The cheapest ones you can pick up off of the ground. I have actually been mildly impressed with the results one can get with sandstone. The more expensive, and much more consistently grit-sized and manufactured ones, are going to cost you anywhere from about $8-50. These are going to do a much better job.

Sharpening systems just make keeping the stone and blade aligned easier, and a bit more precisely.

I don't find S30V to be difficult to sharpen at all, no more or less difficult than D2 or ZDP-189. On the other hand, I may simply be used to sharpening hard wear resistant steels, because when I was sharpening some SAK's the other day I couldn't get them sharper than shaving sharp, but consistently get other steels to hair-popping and hair whittling.

I could not get my Native sharp at all and it is S30v and I almost had given up on it when I bought a Lanskey sharpening system. Its like 24.00 or something. That done the trick for me. It took some practice and the crock stick really made it shaving hair sharp. If your like me and don't have the money on expensive sharpeners, that would be my advice. I just got out of the same problem you have so I do understand. I am not a good sharpening person but that really helped me.

Get the Buck Vantage Pro and learn to sharpen that one (Sharpmaker worked for me) Once you've got it right unleash your skills on the expensive knife.

Thanks, Vassili.

Are the ultrafine triangle sticks ($15 a piece) for the Sharpmaker worth it? Do they add that much over the basic set?

It depends on how sharp you want your knives. If you only care about getting them razor sharp than no you dont need them. If you are like me and want hair popping sharp than its worth every penny. I also find myself using my uf rods more than any other rod.

you just spent $400 on a surfire knife and $50 for a sharpener is too expensive . there are some cheaper options posted by members above.

yes exactly, it's about what value i see in each

thank you to all the rest, i guess i will go with the lansky solution :)

btw, i see there is deluxe version with 2 extra rods, what are they for?

high value in a knife, low value in keeping it sharp, got it .

best luck to you with whatever system you buy.

ugh, what's your problem?

I can't buy the knife i like for less than $400 but certainly can make it sharp for less than $50.

Don't troll the thread anymore!
