S30v- Testing

There was a few months ago where S35VN showed rolling while cutting some thick power cable. The issue of the maker wasn't in question, since it happened with two different manufacturer's knives.

Some member (or s) wanted to see if a S30V Sebenza in particular would display rolling I figured I'd rather post it here then the other thread (since it was s35vn issue, not an s30v- the thread just left me curious as to how s30v would perform):
The cord I was cutting has maybe a little more metal content compared to the thicket orange cord, however less insulation. It came from an HP Adapter three pronged power cord (positive/negative/ground).

This was 40 cuts on a Power cord of an HP laptop adapter (charger if you will). It no longer shaved hair on the cutting portion (two white lines indicate the cutting portion).
No damage to the edge. Neither rolling or micro chipping, Ill check under 100x magnification at home.

I am happy the edge took no damage, may just need a slight touch up.

Don't put much stock into that previous S35VN test. He has since changed his testing methods. After that thread Sal at Spyderco CARTA tested the same knife(spyderco Native 5) and it did just fine.
Chris also tested the sebenza on some cord, and Anne posted here that the steel was fine. Other testers(ankerson for one) tested that same knife and had no problems.

It's not going to hold an edge any longer, but should prove to be a slightly tougher steel than S30V. Both great steels IMO.

Thanks for the test/pic.

Ankerson asked for proof on CRK's side because the post mention the knife being shaving sharp after 300 odd cuts on some power cord which made no sense to him. I am not sure why, I haven't seen his testing on S35VN so I can't comment. Depending on the edge geometry it's possible to keep shaving sharp if the cuts were shared on the entire length of the blade. It took approximately 18 cuts before the shaving sharp went away.

I never saw the results of the particular Native 5 that CrimsonTideshooter, I know Sal made a thread but I have not seen the results. Mind linking me to results by CATRA on that p

Anyways I did the test mostly our of curiosity and felt like sharing the results.

Any steel that cuts through cord like this with no visual damage is good in my book.

Thanks for sharing your findings.

Yes, thanks. As freakin' thick as the convex edge was on my small S30V Seb before I reprofiled it (I mean it was like sharpening a penny and took me forever even with DMT diamond bench stones), I just can't see the edge being very delicate. Dulling easily due to sheer thickness yes, but easily chipping, no.

I thank the guys that test their knives in these ways and post the results. I admit to being a little old fashioned I guess, I "use" my knives but within the parameters I was raised using knives. IF I need to cut heavy gauge wire of any kind I use wire cutters.
I get that the medium is chosen to test the edge, I just don't use my knife in that way. I don't even use my knife to cut up boxes, for that I use a box-cutter.
I dunno, maybe it's just me or maybe I have too many tools:)
As for s30v vs s35v - I have knives in both and wouldn't shy away from either.

it's not the steel but rather the geometry and HT that make the difference
the sebbie IMO has a great geometry

good it came out well, we knew that ;)

CTS (assuming that's whose tests you're referring to?) also posted quite a few messages saying that the testing method wasn't intended to be scientific, so I think that leaves that whole project in some question.
