S30V vs 154cm

You can check the threads and find two basic opinions about S30V.
1) Greatest steel ever
2) Totally bogus because it chips.

There seem to be some unresolved issues with S30V. Sometimes it turns out great, sometimes not. I have not read any such threads about 154CM. As I understand it, when S30V turns out good, it out-performs 154CM. When it turns out not good, it underperforms 154CM.

As I am conservative by nature and cannot afford an item that does not perform, I have not gambled on an S30V blade yet. At this time, I would choose the 154CM. (I chose a VG10 Native over an S30V Native for this reason.)

I will always take S30V over 154cm. I have had excellent results with CPM S30V. I have it in Spyderco/Kershaw/Lone Wolf/Knives of Alaska/Bradley as well as I have built a crude fixed blade 4" S30V skinner that I use a bunch! It's crude but it is effective. I have a couple CRKT A/O w/154cm and they are great knives. It's just the Crucible S30V has been an awsome steel for me. You can find the S30V used in many more mfgs Than the 154cm. I do not think that either are fad materials, I believe that the S30V just got into the right knife builders shops at the right time... L8R... ~baba~

I am a little dissipointed in S30V, However I think it is little better than 154. I am not happy with its edge holding. I guess I am spoiled, after using CPM3V, which gets sharper easier and hold a fantasic edge, I don't understand why it si not used more.

thats all a little helpful see im looking for a knife for cristmas and im between the benchmade pardue 530 or 552 griptilian but i sure love the rukus i have to decide soon. thanks

I use them both. I would make your decision based upon the knife that appeals to you the most. Both knife steels are pretty good. I would rather buy a knife made from 154 cm that being said.

It's also been my experience that if you want a very bright, shiny finish; you're better served with 154CM. Apparently it's a bear to finish S30V to a shiny finish comparable to what one can get from 154CM, 440C, etc.

I definetly prefer 154CM. I have a Microtech in $30V and I find it difficult to sharpen. It also doesn't seem to hold an edge as long as any of my knives in 154CM (Benchmade and Microtech).
