As of right now I have just 2 buck knives a Mayo s30v & a 532 with BG-42. I can get both knives face shaving sharp and never had the chance two pit on against the other until this year. I skinned out and cut up 2 whitetails this year with these knives. To my surprise the BG-42 held up better and took an edge quicker than the S30v. I was wondering has anybody else had a opportunity to compare these two metals.

  You using a 172 to field dress a deer? WOW....

I have two Buck S30V blades and two Buck BG-42 blades. In my experience, the BG-42 seems to hold an edge a little better, but is harder to sharpen. They are both pretty close to each other.

To me a knife is a tool, the better a tool the more efficient a person can work. The knives I collect I use, I have no use for a safe queen. I have been collecting and using knives for about 35 yrs. now and have always made money when I have resold my knives. There is a difference between using and abusing. Most of the knives I buy are not new unless I get a heck of a deal, so the edge:) is already off the retail price. Now if money was the only issue I would never hunt.

I'm wondering if the exclamation is because the 172 is high-dollar or rather because a 172 might seem slightly undersized for that task.

All of the above!!!!!!!!!

I just kind of freaked when I read that. Worked up 4 deer right at the end of the season past and just can't imagine doing it with my 172 is all.. But I guess it surely would do it.

I guess because I have been using a 110 for 30 years or so.

I have a 110 in both steels. I also find BG 42 to be better. It seems to hold an edge longer, and sharpens quicker. Also, it seems to take a much sharper edge. I've had trouble getting S30V to the same level of sharpness as some of my other steels.

I been reading up on "microchipping" of blades, but have not got a good understanding of it. Can anyone give a good definition of what this is and what causes it?
