S30V vs S35VN Blade Markings

Do the S35VN blades have an additional marking on the tang near the pivot screw? I thought the S30V just had an "S" there. Could've sworn I heard someone say the S35VN has a "V" on the opposite side too.

Anyone privy to that info?

Thanks dino.

Odd, I purchased a small lefty 21 (birth Jan 16, 2012) and I guess I received an S30V blade. Birth card definitely says S35VN.

Not worried about it either way, just thought it was interesting. Guess I got one of the last S30V blades.

Nothing in life is perfect, I suggest you get it corrected (with the birthday card) because in the future when and if you decide to sell her, you're going to have a problem with the new owner (maybe). If these knives out of China get better and better, birthday cards (and papers in general) are going to become a little more important IMHO.

The cards are known to have errors... :) I suppose it's not impossible that the blades occasionally get mis-stamped, too. I'd call CRK and ask what they think.

I sent em an email a little earlier, we shall see. I don't care either way, but I'd like to know which it is. Ha, wonder how you could even tell if it was mis-stamped or not.

I'd call...small businesses, even many medium-sized businesses, don't necessarily have the staff to stay on top of emails. If you call, there's some chance you'll wind up talking to Mr. or Mrs. Reeve. :)

Got an email back on something else pretty fast, but I'll probably end up calling later today on this one. Was alright with s35, but s30 was my preference when I ordered this one. I guess The Secret really does work.

If you put an S35VN blade next to a S30V blade you will see pretty clearly that one appears shinier while the other is less shiny. S30V doesn't seem to shine up as easily as S35VN regardless of the blade finish method.

In a nutshell, I have seen every S35VN blade I have owned appear shiner than the same knife with S30V.

The ZT's seem close but there is a definitie difference in how S35VN finishes compared to S30V in all other cases that I have seen so far.

I just received a new left hand umnumzaan with a card that says s35vn. When I hold it next to my s30v Sebenza I really can't see much difference in the shine at all. How obvious is it? Should I shine blades up somehow first (with the polishing cloth, or with some chemical?).

Other than disassembling the Umnumzaan and looking for the V mark, is there any way of telling which steel it is?

The difference between my S30V Zaan and the S35VN Zaan I had until recently was obvious to the naked eye - to me at least.

I polished the s30v Sebenza and the purported s35vn Umnumzaan with a soft clot and they look really similar to me, although I am somewhat colorblind if that matters. (But have good vision otherwise).

PLEASE someone respond to this question:

No need to shout... ;) To answer your question, is there any way to be absolutely certain? No. A card can be wrong. Different batches of steel may look different when polished the same. The same batch of steel may be made into blades that may be polished differently. Honestly, there is so little difference between S30V and S35VN that there is a very, very strong argument that it just doesn't matter.

Ok JNewell - you are right, sorry for the way-over-the-top font. I simply moved it up one size increment and didn't realize it would get so obnoxious. It shows as pure HTML (un - rendered) in the reply box, so I didn't know its appearance. Tnx for responding.

So I guess it stands that the only indication is the stamp on the pivot hole. And that is obscured unless you take the handles apart.
