With all the blather going on about S30V, what is Chris Reeve's take on this steel? Will he continue to use it or switch steels?

No problems with my S30V Seb here. The heat treat is great, makes it more similar to Spyderco's excellent VG-10.

Considering that he helped develop S30V, I doubt he will want a change anytime soon. Although I do like my BG models a tad better, there is nothing wrong with the cpm models. The first few Sebbies I bought were in BG-42, it's a sentimental factor I guess.

Proguide,
My first Seb was BG-42 and I think that was my sharpest folder out of the box. But my S30V Seb now is right-there. Maybe the higher rockwell on the BG-42 steel made the blade feel sharper? No complaints with this S30V blade!

I've got knives in S30V from several makers, incl 3 Sebenzas. None has ever given me a problem from EDC to outdoor use. S30V and VG10 are my two favorite SS for folders.

I have many S30V knives, and have NOT ever had a problem with them.
Chris Reeve was instrumental in developing S30V. There is no reason for him to switch.

I have to agree with you guys. I wish BG-42 were still an option. Higher RC and just seems to cut forever. The 1.20% vanadium in BG-42 compared to 5.50% in S30v might have been the deciding factor in switching to the CPM steel. Vanadium combined with chromium(14.50BG,14.00s30) makes the steel very strong
;)

How about the ZDP steels in a sebenza. That should make big difference, no??

That would not be a good idea : firstly, all the blades would have to be manufactured in Japan, because of the secret heat treatment kept by Hitachi.
Then, if the blades would be sharper OTB, they would also be much more fragile and difficult to sharpen latter, and in particular outdoor...

I agree with Carlito3637. ZDP189 is a PITA AFAIC. I have 3 ZDP knives and that's the end of ZDP for me. I know some folks love it and have no problem using it and keeping it sharp. I'm just not one of 'em.

S30V is much easier for me to work with and it's been a very good steel for my usage.

CRK is a huge fan of S30V for the reasons mentioned above plus their relationship with Crucible is one of their strongest industry bonds. So if it's not a steel they could get through Crucible, I doubt they would buy it - with the exception of Damascus.
