Is it true that S30V is the best steel used in blades today? I've heard harder is better, and I've heard that softer can sometimes be better. I'm looking for input so I can make more informed decisions on the expensive knives I may purchase in the future.

Thank you

S30V is one of the better stainless steels around. As it is with the right blade shape and grind it comes down to the right steel for the job. If you must have a stainless steel then S30V will serve you well - I have found it has good edge retention and cutting ability on a par with D2 which I rate as the best knife steel around.

I just bought a D2 KaBar and I love it. It's not as sharp as my al mar sere 2000, but it still cuts especially through tough stuff like hard cardboard and stuff really well, maybve even better than the sharper sere2000. I agree that D2 is some damn fine stuff, but haven't had enough experience with either of my 2 knives to tell which is better

I have been very impressed with the S30V blade on my Military. It holds a very sharp edge thru hard use and touches up easily with my Sharpmaker. I'm a pretty big fan and recommend it.
