Contemplating a custom 110 and the only steels I see are S30V and 420HC. What I'm wondering is all the talk I've heard on the forums are how brittle and chippy S30V is. Am I being too anal?

NO you are not...
420HC is Dayum good steel and if ya wants MP it shines best!
the latest steel fashon is bg42 and day is some BG42 snobby
wit der bg42 club a singing disco songs and danceing the hussel waveing knives around...
s30v will be best with any exposure to salt or frish water...
it is a tad easer to make sharp
bg42 is harder and will hold shaveing edge longer..but tag harder to sharpen
why? ;what ya wants one fer? use or show...? :D

I heard they had plenty of BG-42, it's just that the site is not up to date.

Call and ask.

I'd go with the BG, myself.

good morning ROC!
some how i jest kinda figured U wood would do the bg42 hussel!...
hee hee hee...
MHO is that s30v is no more brittle then any other ...
all have more brittle then cool old school 440c with its thicker simi hollow grind rather then full hollow y2k edge...
sniff sniff ...miss the old days...and health ... and hair ... and young girls..
but ya gota to know how to sharpen a knife BY HAND
and sadly many dont...:(

It would see some use not hard though. I didn't know BG-42 was available. I guess I would prefer BG-42 as you never hear as much negative. I guess even if I never used a knife I still would like it to perform up to my expectations. Sound wierd? Thanks for input.

I have a 110AG S30V that is one of favorite in my EDC 110 rotation. Have used it for quite some time with no chips. I chipped a Kalinga S30V very slightly...and that was because I screwed up.

Yes, I love BG-42...dunno why. Maybe because it was my first 110 Custom (see pic).

Having said that, I think the S30V is sharper outta the box...wicked sharp. The other steel that seemed just as sharp and had a fine edge (like the 110aG s30V) is the Damascus.

My current 110 EDC rotation is either the AG S30V or 2007 Rain Drop Damascus.

I have several S30V Buck knives and currently a custom shop S30V 110 on order. I love the stuff! No chipping here whatsoever. But then again, I love 420HC and Ats34 and 154cm... :D

I doubt there's a significant difference.

Somehow, though......I just like BG-42 ..... (I mean the name).

Bearing Grade!

Sounds tough.

:D

good thing you dont love as many wim-men as ya do steel!;)
would be in the dog house wit the wife a loooong times!:p

You won't be disappointed with Buck's S30v as long as you don't hit rocks or other such things. It holds an edge considerably longer than the 420HC. BG-42 from Buck is also very good. Either one would do.
