I've had exactly one week with my new small Seb. in S30V, and so far, I really, really like it. Mundane cutting tasks have indicated no discernable differences between it and BG42 in edge retention. Saturday, before shipping out some stuff in the AM at the post office, I cut seven empty shipping boxes and pieced them together in a large box to "cradle" around a fragile object in the middle. She's still shaving hair! I've gotta do the same thing this Saturday, and I'm betting it'll dull the edge, as it would have my BG42 model.

As far as re-sharpening, I haven't had to do it yet. Have others? What was your experience with sharpening it vs. BG42?

How's everybody else doing with the new stuff? Just curious...

Well Professor you beat me to the punch! I was going to post and ask you how the S30V was doing. Sounds like it is doing fine so far. keep us updated. Inquiring minds want to know;) :D

But wasn't hair-popping sharp afterward. Resharpened on my fine-grit ceramic Spydies stones very well. I won't say "easier" than would BG42, but perhaps.

There was all kinds of gunk inside the knife. I popped it apart, and noticed that the S30V blade is marked near the pivot hole with an "S." I wondered how they'd tell the difference other than the birth certificates, and there you have it!

Can't say enough about the double thumbstuds. I really like them as opposed to my single-studded BG42 model. I'm by no means ambidextrous, but find myself using my left hand when using other tools, tape, etc.

I have had my large S30V for almost two weeks. The first week I used it fairly hard: back cutting copes in the end grain of mahogany boards. It was shaving sharp after the first week! Impressive! I did, however, sharpen the knife because I also used the belly of the blade to clean off old construction adhesive from the back side of old mahogany base board and crown molding--that managed to dull the belly. I reprofiled the entire edge to 30 degress compound with a combination of diamond rods, gray ceramic and white ceramic in my Sharpmaker. Entire job took me 1/2 hour. I think my reprofiling ended up being sharper than the factory edge. This last week was more of the same, workwise. And the edge is still shaving sharp. Impressive edge holding. For me, imho, the S30V is more than a moderate jump in performance over BG-42.

How's your S30V-blade Seb.(s) holding up?

Mine's doing quite well. I have noticed faster dulling and/or edge deformation than BG42 (I use my small Seb to occasionally de-burr holes drilled in 6061T6 aluminum), but re-sharpening on my Spyie Triangle set is much easier and faster as well.

Just wondering...

Man...I'd give my left hand to be ambidextrous! ;)

I have a spydie triangle also, and wonder if the angle available is right. choice is 30* or 40*. I know 40* aint right. but 30* almost doesnt seem right either. Maybe 20*? :)

The blade doesnt seem as sharp as some other knives I have. one in VG-10 has a shallow thin blade edge and scares hair away!

maybe the Sebenza is not made to scare hair? :p

I should just use the 30 and like it?

I believe that CRK recommends 40. I heard that at the shop they go 18 on each side (total 36).

Cutting cardboard almost exclusively. I haven't really been able to tell a lot of difference in cutting between S30V and the BG42, both cut like crazy!:) As far as sharpening I use the 204 set at the 30 degree angle and it sharpens right up.

as an aside I just picked up a Carson large 16 with S30V. Going to see how well it holds up against the Sebenza with cutting cardboard. Don't know right off what Kit rockwells his S30V at though.
