i primarally use 5160 steel in my knife making. i have mayde a kitchen knife from 154cm for my wife. but i had a buddy that hunts and wants me to make him a skinning knife from s35vn. now i have never used this stuff i have a paragon kiln and was wondering if this steel can be brought to a good heat treat with out having to cryo it or anything like that. i can do oil, air, and water quenches. how would you heat treat this stuff??????

Here is the data sheet from Crucible. The cryo helps the conversion into martensite. Cryo for CPM-S35VN is designed around straight dry ice at -112°. You don't need liquid nitrogen for cryo, according to Crucible.

Now, here's the wrinkle. The experts on here state that you should perform cryo after the quench and before the first temper. The data sheet from Crucible states very specifically to perform cryo between the two tempers.

Some of the members here had done some experiments with cryo and tempering. This with either 154CM or CPM154 IIRC .This was based on hardness measurements. Tempering at 300 F would not stabilize the retained austenite .Higher temperatures would . So the 300 F "snap temper" I recommended for those not wanting to direct from quench to cryo.
Further comments would have to be discussions with a Crucible metallurgist.
