Ok, experts. How does a person heat treat S7, for use as throwing knives? I got talked into making a few throwing knives for some local(read, knife abusing idiots) friends. I was going to make them out of 5160, but Aldo talked me into S7(it was cheaper and every bit as tough, I was told). Not talking about actual cutting edge knives here; just something that these fukkers can throw and throw and throw and not break. The S7 I have coming is .200" thick x 3" wide x 48" long. I figure these throwers to end up around 10"-12" long each.
I have a gas forge and an Evenheat oven and I also have Park's AAA quenching oil. Is S7 better quenched in air or oil?
