Hi guys,

I hope you all doing well. I am considering getting a new axe, and one of the models that I like is made out S7 steel. I do not have any experience with S7, and was wondering since it is tool steel how easy it rusts? Besides keeping it dry and clean, what else can you recommend to protect the axe from rust? Thank you very much!!!

Something from 13 years ago talking about this very steel.

Awesome! Thank you!!!

I’ve recently been using a Swamp Rat with their version of S7 and it’s very nice. Seems to hold an edge slightly better than their version of 52100 for chopping in my experience. I gave the knife a vinegar patina before use and no rust issues - good stuff!

The most commonly used item made from S7 is jackhammer bits. They form very shallow rust fairly easy but it is a very shallow rust that is easily removed. It is my understanding that heat treat will effect the ability of most steels to form rust as well so my experience is only with jackhammer bits. In knives it is known for toughness at the expense of holding a fine edge, overall a decent steel for choppers and axe like tools.
