I'm hoping for a little help here from the resident metallurgical gurus - I tried doing a search, but my browser says it can't connect to the the search page ( Safari - it does this sometimes)

anyway, I was given a piece of S7 drill rod, and I'd like to try and forge it, but before I screw it up too much, want to know any tricks y'all have, and how it needs to be heat treated. I know it's a "shock resistant" steel, so it should be good for a chopper!

Second, has anyone heard of S2 steel, or know the specs for it (elements, %, etc)

Thanks in advance!

Bill

S2 - .55C, .50Mn, 1.00Si, .50Mo, .20V [optional].......S7 - .50C, .70Mn, .30Si, 3.25Cr, 1.40Mo .....S7, harden at 1700-1750F, anneal 1500-1550F,forging 1900-2050F, impact strength highest between 400-800F temper.

thanks Mete, I was hoping you'd see this! How long would I soak at austenitizing temp, and would I air cool or oil quench? If it's oil, I imagine it would be a slower oil, like Park AAA vs, say, Park 50.
Thanks again
Bill
