I decided to USE my limited run s90v Survive! Knives GSO 4.1 and this is what happened.

There's a run of grass that had overgrown into my mulch bed so I thought I would use this to cut the grass. Now before any comments, I'll say that I'm not crying about this damage and fully expected that by putting a knife into the ground I would sustain any number of results. These beds are quite deep with grass and mulch. I've actually never found rocks. I didn't stab the knife into the ground rather was cutting or sawing if you prefer. I did hear it hit a rock at one point and so of course it was that doing one area of damage. But it didn't hit hard at all and so this amount of damage has surprised me.

Anyone else have experience with USING s90v? Seems like this is about the steel being brittle right? I have DMT course and fine stones on the way already to get this back...seems like the factory edge was pretty course.

...and no, I won't be using this blade for sod/mulch into the ground anymore.

That no more damage than would be expected really... Pretty normal...

No real bad chips and the blade didn't chip out.

Just sharpen it to clean the edge up.

Just a few little nicks. I'd say it held up pretty well. Clean that edge up and it should be good as new.

I also wouldn't call that damage, you use it its eventually going to need to be touched up.

+1 What he said.

I don't see any "damage" at all. A little dulling at the front part, yes but nothing I would call "damage"
Touch it up a little and you're good to go

What were you expecting? That looks fine to me, but I wouldn't use S90v for yardwork when there are other more sensible choices for that task.

Doesnt look all that bad at all. I'd say it held up pretty well. And if it was brittle you would have a nice chunk out of the edge! This just looks like what happens to a blade when it comes into contact with dirt, rocks, sand, etc etc.

'Tis but a scratch!

Throw it on the stones for a few minutes and it should be good as new.

LOL!!!

Yes, more sensible choices.....such as my Stihl edger or super cheap Gerber machete.

I was doing this more as an experiment on the steel. I'm not sure my photography picked up the deepest chip I can put my nail in.

I don't think it's major damage either....

No damage on that knife at all. That is what you call "wear from use". S90V has no magical properties, nor has anyone ever claimed that it will not wear when used.

That is why I don't use high carbide steels for cutting sod. Doesn't look too bad, one or two passes into the stone should grind off any of that weakened metal and it should sharpen up quite nicely.

I've used my Spyderco military to cut sod once, never again. All steels pretty much perform the same under such conditions, but I prefer to use steels that will resharpen easier and take less damage.

S90V is not very tough. So that is not too surprising if it happened to make contact with rocks ect. Nothing wrong with testing out your steel though.

I was looking at this knife everyday in my Maxpedition Mulaga thinking...wish I had something I need to use this on. It was sort of an initiation of a "virgin" knife. Now I'll fire up the rotating China steel on the edger.
