I was looking to purchase a knife with S90V to test out. I was wondering what is out on the market with S90V. I know the Spyderco Military comes with it, but are there any others?

Thanks

As I know, there are only two of them - Spyderco Military and Microtech Socom Elite (this one very difficult to find)

This steel is not in production. There were few limited edition runs - Microtech did it first and twice and now Spyderco Military is available, but it is also limited run, so far.

Thanks, Vassili.

I didn't realize the Socom came in S90V. That's awesome. I'll have to try to find one.

Thanks guys

Is 440V now known as S90V? If so you may be able to find an older Kershaw Boa in 440V. I think NG has some listed as CPM440V.

Yes vassili they claim they are running only 1000 pcs.I just got mine yesterday get them while you can guys. The way spyderco seems to be running things they probibly will try another exotic steel next.maybe cpm 15v:thumbup: or something that most companies won't use because it wears their equiptment down. :oI like spyderco because they will run what the knife junkies want:D

It was the Socom Elite and they were last made in 2005 or 06, I forget which date my two are. They are nice, though VERY difficult to find anymore. Good luck on that. They were also a bit more expensive than the Spyderco. I have two of the MT's in S90, and find them well made. The Spyderco is more ergonomic to me, and as well made or better IMO. They're readily available now too. Between them I prefer the Millie. Joe

Sorry, but no. 440V is also known as S60V. It has more vanadium than S30V and less than S90V. I like it, but from what I understand CPM no longer produces it, partly because of complaints about it being hard to sharpen. It isn't if you use diamond hones.

CPM S90V was CPM 420V before and continue to be marked like this by J.P.Holmes who making knives out of it. CPM 440V became CPM S60V and then was discontinued as being completely outperformed by CPM S90V (420V).

Now best what Crucible can offer even exceed CPM S90V - is new CPM S125V.

Thanks, Vassili.

I didn't realize the 440 is now S60V. Was S30V something else before, or was it a new composition?

As far as I know, S30V has no other name. I guess that would mean it was a new formula.

My question is how do you resharpen a steel that hard?

I'm using the spyderco resharpening unit, and finding 154 and S30V are very diffiuclt to resharpen.

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated

diamonds..........

I have the original Chinook in 440V and diamonds work fine (with some effort of course!)

You can buy 3 piece diamond stone sets, fine/med/course (they are flat plates about 2" by 5 1/2") and use rubber bands to attach them to the sharpmaker rods. It works well with the harder steels and the stone sets are only around $10 if you get the cheapies. I was having a heck of a time with my m2 grip until I got the diamonds. I had also previously purchased the sharpmaker diamond rods and was still having trouble with the m2 until I got the f/m/c/ diamond set.

There is no problem at all to sharpen any steel! I spend same amount of time sharpening 420V and CPM S90V or ZDP-189 to hair whittling sharpness. This "concerns" raised again and again like a mantra trying to protect by this "magic" those knife manufacturers who use ages old cheap steel against new super performing steel.

Thanks, Vassili.

Lycosa go to youtube and type nozh2002 in the search and Vassili has several videos posted on sharpening, edge retention testing and hair whittling. It is all very interesting.
