I've always been partial to S30V (since 2009 at least). Great steel all around for me. But ever since I received my Yojimbo2 S90V , I've been in love with this new steel. The edge retention is superior to anything I've used before. And although I'm a fan of M390 , this S90V seems to match or surpass it from my experience. But I feel like comparing these two super steels is like splitting hairs. They are both exceptional.

Now after a month of carrying my Yo2-S90V , I'm hooked. And I keep looking for other knives that have S90V to add to my collection. Anyway , I'm just happy to report that I'm beyond thrilled with this fantastic steel.

I thought M390 didn't necessarily excel in super crazy edge retention, rather, great toughness at high hardness. I'm probably wrong though! Haven't tried s90v, have had a lot in s30v though. I really want to try it out... how's the sharpening compared to s30v? I've never really had problems with s30v so...

I'm not positive about the edge retention of M390 myself but from my experience it holds a great edge for a long while. But S90V seems to hold it noticeably longer from what I can tell. Years ago it took me a little while to adjust to sharpening S30V (after using and sharpening mostly just 154CM) but once I got it I really got it. S90V seems to have a slight learning curve as well. It's a little tougher to get the hair popping razor edge but I think I have it nailed down. I've only touched up the blade once and it's still super sharp. Much of the greatness that I'm experiencing with S90V may have something to do with Spydercos heat treat. They did an excellent job.

S90v is great! One of my most carried knives is a Benchmade 940-1, the version with carbon fiber and s90v steel. I have found the steel, like you, to have great edge holding. Also, it is no more difficult to sharpen than s30!

I just recently have been carrying 2 different M390 Benchmades and I am super impressed they both sharpen quite easily, get a razor sharp edge, and some recent intentional testing while camping or just whittling on the back porch it seems to dull down evenly and still maintain a functionally sharp cutting edge as opposed to being left with a "butter knife" after some hard use. The S90V which I also have on a Benchmade 940-1 #32 of 750 is a little more picky about sharpening, I currently have a sharp edge on the knife thanks to my wicked edge but you really learn a steel when you start to sharpen them and just like people they are all a little different, I have to be honest I'm not liking the S90V and will either carry my regular 940 or one of the others with M390, so my Benchmade 940-1 #32 of 750 will probably be up for sale or trade some time soon.
