Those you that have knives s90v and cpm4 which is the best all around

steel in terms of holding a sharp edge, cutting ability, sharpeningl, and all the

other qualities we look for in a premium steel.

I have an s90v Millie but nothing in cpm4 in a plain edge.

What do you use it for?

I work with a lot of hard and abrasive materials, and for me S90V works much better. M4 is easier to sharpen, takes a better edge, holds it well for things like woodworking and game skinning, but it doesn't impress me when it hits the sheetrock, old carpet, plywood and particle board. S90V leaves it behind for that stuff.

I love them both, I've had similar experiences to Yab, however for me CPM M4 is an absolute demon when it comes to push cutting without any edge degradation. Yet I always seem pick up a fair amount of edge damage and minor chipping with forceful pull cuts / slicing.
CPMS90V for me holds an edge better overall with the only expense being a little harder to sharpen.
Personally I'm hoping Sal will make an CPM S90V serrated Millie someday, that would be truly unstoppable.

I haven't tried S90V but I cut a chunk of the top cover off of a water heater with my 760 the other day. No edge damage... Still sharp even! M4 is my current fave. ;)

I got a GB and I got S90V blade. Not the same grind and not the same maker.
CPM M4 is reaching "amazing" level as far as I have used it and I was not really able to get a good edge on my S90V knife. (Damn hard, you need a backstand to get it back to sharp!)
So CPM M4 for my vote here. (and CPM M4 is not M4!)

But I assume the question is about S90V and CPM M4 as heat treated and grind by Spyderco ?

Mule owners with both models should be able to help on that matter.
This is why the Mule Project is for in the first place. Test and comparaison.

And soon the lucky owners of the Millie S90V and M4 should be able to give an accurate answer.
I'm heading forward reading the results of their tests.

M4 rusts.

Some people seem to love that.

I'd just as soon have S90V.

So far of the two I only have S90V. To my eye it appears to be the king of steels. I have only a Sharpmaker and really no special knowledge when it comes to sharpening and I have been able to keep these knives plenty sharp. Bear in mind they came to me sharp and I dont use them to cut up carpets every day. ;)

I have no experience with CPM-M4. I am looking forward to the M4 Millie. I have been toying with the idea of getting a GB but its not really my cup of tea in a folder.

S90V for me. I have a lot more time on the S90V mule and so I'm biased but there's nothing that impressed me more. I really wish I could've gotten a M4 mule. :(

I like both.

IMLE M-4 is slightly "tougher" and easier to sharpen. OTOH, S90V seems to hold an edge longer.

Both can be taken to low angle, and polished to mirror bright, hair splitting sharp.

I have been sharpening S90V to 15 degrees per side, and M-4 to 10. However, the next time I sharpen one of my S90V knives, (If one of them ever gets dull :p ) I'm going to try 10 degrees per side.

M4 is much tougher and works at higher hardnesses. S90V has about twice the carbide volume and also has twice the vanadium and three times the chromium. M4 is not stainless. These are rather different steels.
