Here's an updated, and final, version of this knife/sheath package.
I posted this knife a while back when it originally had a rather simple Scandi style leather sheath, but I felt it needed an upgrade to make the whole piece work. My goal was incorporate some of the traditional Saami materials and design elements with local materials into a standard, utilitarian Hunter design. I tried, at first, to make the bottom part entirely of moose antler, but I didn't have "just the right piece", so I went with an moose inlay in a slab of very nice Red Maple burl harvested in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. The sheath tip is a turned antler tip with just a hint of the natural green coloring left on the surface. All the antler came from the same shed rack found in the famous Cape Breton Highlands.
This one was quite a challenge! One set of prime Fiddle-back Maple slabs, two leather upper cases, two birch bark welts, one antler D-ring, and three antler conches were destroyed in the progress of building this sheath! :grumpy:
What the photos can't show though, is the uber-satisfying.... "clack".... that accompanies the knife being drawn into the sheath with a smooth caming action then firmly seating the guard flush against the wooden collar....."clack". Ahghhhghhhghhh..... that's just soooooo nice!!
Anyway it isn't perfect, but I'm quite happy with it.
##Sorry the photos are so large. I'm having issues with Al Gore's invention here. If any of you computer wizards out there care to remedy this...... go for it.
Here are the particulars:
Knife
Blade: 3/16" x 4 1/2" O1 steel, full flat grind, hand rubbed to 800grit. Bolted and epoxied hidden tang.
Handle: Weathered Moose antler and Birch bark with ebonized Pear wood spacers.
Sheath
Contoured Red Maple burl lower case with weathered Moose antler inlay
Birch bark welt with ebonized Pear wood spacers
Turned moose antler tip
Buffed tung oil finish with a final polish of carnuaba paste wax
***
Wet-formed 5oz. veg tanned cow hide upper case(glued and stitched to the wood upper)
4oz veg tanned leather belt loop with Moose antler tack head and D-ring
Moose antler conch with Moose hide lanyard
Hand stitched with waxed nylon thread, buffed Bear Grease finish
Comment, critiques, and life-sapping criticisms are all welcome.
Enjoy the photos.....
