Saber Grind vs. Full Height Flat Grind – Which Do You Prefer and Why?

Are there any advantages to one vs. the other?

From a geometry perspective (not my best subject in school :)), it would seem for a blade of the same size, shape and spine thickness (like say a .22" thick ASH-1), that the blade just above the edge would be thicker on a saber grind than on a full height flat grind (but maybe not enough to make a noticeable difference?).

What are your thoughts on one vs. the other?

I prefer flat. Slices better, in my limited experience (due largely to my limited selection) the chopping ability is indistinguishable in similarly-sized knives. And, well, there's just something sexier about a full flat ground blade. :D

Cheers,
Adam

Flat for me, I like the largest, longest uninterrupted expanse of INFI possible... But Saber is nice too....and Convex...
Curse this obsession with shiny metal things !

Flat is hands down my favorite. It performs excellent at slicing, and does rather well in most other fields. Whats not to like?

Flat for slicers and convex for choppers.

Al said it!!! Yes in regards to geometry to the diff between Sabre vs Flat. BUT that much of an angle difference is not really enough to notice. Where a Sabre shines is in the added side load strength. Just a simple fact of more metal to pry against if that has to occur. Not that I'm saying to use your knife as a pry bar cause they do make tools for that. It's just one time in my life I had to scale a rock wall and I was wearing a bunch of army junk. No tools in site so you do what you have to. I must admit I was a LOT lighter in those days but I still bent my knife (brand I will not mention). From that time on I viewed a military/survival knife in a different light. This is just MHO. If I have a tool close by, I'll use it to save my knife for it's intended use;)

I recently tested a knife (not a busse ) it was billed as a tuff durable knife, flat grind , held a decent edge , I was digging out a hole in a piece of wood and without warning the tip snapped off with bearly any pressure, about a half inch of blade , had I been camping or in a survival situation I would be stuck with a less the adequate tool which would really suck,
I have put my busses that I use through many situations , prying , chopping, battoning and I am very confident to depend on them.

I prefer the looks of the full-flat. But not by a huge margin...;-)

All you full flat lovers, please allow me to try and change your minds. With facts? No, just this... ;)

If you are willing to loan that to me and let me give it a try, you might change my mind. ;) Seriously, that's a nice looking knife!

There is a saber grind that I really like for slicing, and that is where the sloped part of the blade down to the edge is hollow ground (like on the Busse Steak Knife).

Looks great Jaxx - thanks! Also think the saber looks best polished, not painted...Cheers

Wow ! Nice knife Jaxx !
Is that a factory finish or is it something you did yourself ? And if you did it yourself, is there a tutorial or How-to anywhere ?
I'm feeling a bit converted !

Sweet knife Jaxx !!!!!!

Got to love the sabre SFNO !!!!! Wish the shop would do a run of those or at least a variation of the NMSFNO and SFNO :D
