Found an older sabre Japan original Bowie at a flea market awhile back and am refinishing it. Does anyone have any information on the steel used? When I wet formed the sheath some water got in the wrap on the blade and it started rusting in a few spots, no biggie as I want to put a patina on the blade if possible. I did a bit of research but couldn't find much on them. Some said it was cheap stainless used for the blade but I'm not sure. I have it sitting now in vinegar so we can see in a day if it worked! I'll post pics of it when it's all finished

Thanks!

Does it look like this one?

This is an Japan Enco Original Bowie.

Quite a few of the Sabre Brand Bowies from Japan were carbon steel, so yours is definitely one of the carbon steel ones.. As well, there are a number of stainless ones out there to be found. Yours should patina up for you quite nicely.

Ron

Here is the "finished" project. Turned out better than expected. The patina looks great on the blade. All to do is seal the handle and sharpen the edge!

wow, I just found one of these too. I must have bought it when I was 10 years old or so(forty some odd years ago). I made a sheath for it a few years later in shop class.

I'll have to sharpen it up and see how it goes...

Can you buy sheaths for these? I recently found one in an old barn and its in decent condition, just needed to be cleaned and sharpened, but I was wondering if I could get a sheath for it. Thanks.

There are generic sheaths you can buy online that it should fit in ( never gonna be like it was made for it though )
