Well, one of the SAKs that is kinda special to me cracked a scale recently. So, I did this:

This knife is special because its a layer mod done for me by Luke over on the SOSAK at KF. It is a basic Huntsman, my favorite SAK, and he added the pliars.

You can't get a Vic with this feature set. Wenger makes one, but for some reason they serrated the main blade. Schmuck.

Anyway, the project is fast and easy and cool, so I have kinda gone nuts and all my knives are on the block.

So, I decided to take some pics of the process for you today. The first step is the hard part. Anytime you use a chisel be sure you have a fixture that allows you to keep your hands behind the chisel.

Setting up the table saw to rip the micarta to width.

If you use a tablesaw, you'd better have these:

Or this may happen to you too!

Now. The blanks are ready. For this project I used 1/8" thick natural canvas micarta. Its cheap as dirt, and tough as nails. Just hold the old scales onto the material, and scribe the outline.

I love this old chisel.

Sand or file to the scribed line.

You can see here, I used the old scale to mark the location of the relief spots for the pins. I just drilled through the old scale, then used a sharpie to mark through the holes.

Then its off to the dremmel to gouge out the reliefs. Don't be intimidated by this step, its easy with a dremmel, and really doesn't need to be accurate.

If you get a nice tight fit with a small amount of pressure, then you're good.

Sand the scales now. Also, rough up the sides of the knife, and clean everything with acetone. Put spots of superglue, or epoxy into the reliefs, and a few small spots on the flats of your scales and clamp.

THis project takes less than 1/2 hour, and really improves your knife IMO. Also, it really doesn't take a lot of powertools. If you have a dremmel, you can do it.

Thanks for taking the time to lay this out. I for one really appreciate it, also, I think you just gave me the inspiration/motivation to tackle my own project.

Thats awesome....I have a One Handed Sentinal Ive been wanting to put Black Canvas on....

Thanks Andy!!

Yep. I first saw Scibeer do these too. I didn't understand at the time how easy this project is. Especially just using 1/8" thick micarta. Pow. Done. Way better SAK.

I gotta shave off some stabalized burl, so I can really make one pop!

You should do one with one of your signature lanyard holes as a shield. Just fill the center of it.:thumbup:

Great stuff!

Funny, I was just thinking of pulling my old SAK apart the other day! Ha!

Thanks for the inspiration!

Great post, Andy. You are the king of handles!

I just thought this project was a helluva lotta fun. I like the Bullseye suggestion too. Lots of extra work though...

LOL.

Modded SAK handles always look unique, and I think that makes them stand out amongst others. Great job, Andy.
