I have never seen anything like this posted in this subforum. Sorry if it is a rehash.
So - I keep staring at the pics of the blue anodized XMs that were presented at Blade.

I really want one.
So much so that I was thinking of buying my own titanium anodizer.

Has anyone ever done this to their Hinderer?
And- I assume this would void any warranty?

The absolute best advice I can give is to politely ask Mr. Rob Orlando about your want of blue anodized pieces.
The shop is always super busy, but asking first can never hurt.

His contact info can be found as the author of the stickies.

If you own a Hinderer, it would be more of a very special spa treatment; and like I say, they are busy.

At the very least you will know where they stand on your request and I'd also ask how trying your own anodizing would affect any warranty before attempting it.

In the end, like any thing you buy...it is your knife. If you are willing to take full responsability for your actions and choose to do anything to your property (that does not impact others), it is ultimately your decision.

Note, if the OP is referring to the lovely example shown in the pre-show pics with the grey scale, it appears to be a DLC coating over a bead blast treatment.

A lot more involved than the simple anodised version.

yes - that one.
Can't stop thinking about it.
Thanks for the perspective.

I'm a bit confused. The OP said blue. I am not aware of any blue DLC Hinderers. There are Ti bits that are anodized then sand or bead blasted or even hand polished and so on.

No confusion, I suspect I 'm wrong.
For some reason I was convinced I had read that they produced a blue DLC, at the time I thought cool, someone has managed to colour the DLC process but did not follow up on it.
I would say that the blue XM in question has a blue anodised over a bead or sand blasted finish.

Sorry.

There are DIY threads in the M,T&E sub-forum. I've never done it. I would read and research A LOT before attempting and yes, that would certainly qualify as "pimping" a knife.
As N2K intimated, the shop is quite busy just keeping up with demand. Can always inquire but, I imagine it would be quite a wait. Can't see the workload diminishing anytime soon.

The knife in question is mine. I purchased it at Blade. I specifically asked Rick about it and he said that it was blasted and then anodized blue.

Now, I must say that I slightly regret buying this as my first. Its so nice and I'm terrified of messing it up by carrying it everyday. Part of me wishes I had just gone with a blasted or stonewashed finish.

Don't fret, either carry her and use her OR save up and buy a "user" and admire your beauty as time goes on. I find that even EDC use really does not booger anything up. Now, that said - I'm not prying nails and batoning with my Hinderers (that just isn't my style) not judging anyone that does. I use pry bars to pry and machetes to "machete" my EDC does tuff that knives do - Cut, slice, cut, shave,cut.....well, you get the idea.

No its not that. The anodizing already has a few small, well not scratches but marks, in it. I just don't want it to wear off completely or anything. And I carry my knives. Well I did anyways. Until I got the XM. Now I just about only carry my XM.

My experience with annodized finishes is they will wear off, some call that "patina". Only the owner can make that call.
I know the "Me" of 20+ years ago - No Way.
But, Lots of strangers have ended up with really Nice stuff that I kept "perfect" just for them.

My bronze 24 has been riding in pocket or in hand for over a year and still looks darn good. Just posted pics of it yesterdayish.
Here's the skinny. If you decide to use your knife as the tool it is, worry less about scuffs and scratches. You want to safe queen her, that's your business. It is not easy to do both because you will unnecessarily baby your knife.

That's why I decided once I EDC a knife it's no longer a queen. As Rubi said, I also am not batoning or heavily prying with them (unless it is the only option), but the Hinderers I EDC cut something pretty much every day.

So I snapped a couple of quick iphone pics.

Here you can see the scuffs. Not really scratches but definitely don't wipe away either.

And here you can see the pocket clip gets a little more abuse since its outside my pocket and being a big guy, I bump into a lot of stuff.

Oh I am. That was never a question. I was merely pointing out, that, if I had it to do over again, I likely would have waited on the colored one and got a stonewash first. Either way, I love having a pair of Hinderers in my pocket (XM18 and Investigator).

It looks pretty sexy to me. A couple scuffs add character. You may be hurting resale value a bit, but if you are keeping it then it does not matter.
The blasted finishes will show scuffs and scratches more than stonewash, without doubt. True with most any knife.

For heavy users, the stonewash is a great choice.
When you get your name / ticket called at Blade and rush to the table...you grab the knife that catches your eye. What you chose is a lovely XM. I am pleased to hear you carry it.

The clip is an easier fix than the frame. My vote is to make it your primary or secondary EDC and not worry about its finish. Like mentioned, a future spa treatment to restore it in some way may be an option. But I'm talking years from now, after a lot more character develops, when your knife really needs a makeover.

As mentioned, that is the perfect plan. Cap said, "If I had it to do over stonewash first then a pretty one" So, in a couple years or however long it takes and a stonewash comes available - snag it and send the Blue Ano in for some TLC.
Just like a perfectly executed plan.

Nice to put a knife to a name. You are a lucky man.
Use it and love it. Then use it some more.
I have a stonewash xm - so I keep looking at the next one up...
You can always get a regular stonewashed hinderer (did I just say "regular"??!). But when the lottery calls - it is time to reach for the sky.

and not to disagree with N2K - but you are not hurting resale. I will pay whatever you want!

Use it...pics of one that rides to work daily. 3 minutes under the blast hood and 30 seconds in the anodizer and it would be brand new.
