Well lets see pick this plumb up off the bay and it is nice. Mushroom on the poll well there was none but after cleaning I found a crack on the cheek side of the eye makes me wounder if that is where the axe was folded over and welded to form the eye. The crack is so small I am sure will work for a long time but being a man who owns a welder might as well fix it and yes there will be lots of precautions will be taken to protect the temper. This is also my first rafting axe.

Good looking axe. Go for it. Never know what might happen in cold weather if you leave the crack in it. For a little crack like that you could weld it even without the precaution of wrapping the bit with a wet rag. The weld just won't produce enough heat to spread that far. But better safe than sorry.

Yes but I plan on cutting some out to get to the leading edge of the crack and welding it up with two or three passes should not warp the head if done right I have had a few that I have fixed that had cracks all the way through and they turned out fine but they were not as nice as this one. But maybe I only think this one is so nice because its a rafting axe and there is no water in Colorado.

Thanks tell me what you think haft soon to be

Wow! That looks absolutely fantastic Coloradoman. Based on the finished product there, I would have no idea there had ever been any damage or repairs to it. Looks flawless!

Can't wait to see it hafted!

Thanks guys took a long time to clean out the cheek side of the eye had to use a hack saw and took two passes with a 6011 welding rod. after welding used a round file to reshap the eye sorry i do not have photos of that. I have the haft on it and she cuts real nice
