Sad Gerber Story that My Have a Happy Ending

So quite a while ago my son got me a Gerber LMF II. I really wanted that knife. The problem is, I couldn't get it sharp. I mean nothing. I can sharpen knives. I do it all the time. I begin to think this thing is made of some sort of terrible steel that simply will not take an edge! Sort of gave up on it and threw it in a tool box.

Fast forward to last week. Got a Becker BK2 Companion. Has the plastic form fitted sheath. The knife was, so I thought, hair shaving sharp out of the box which is something I have come to expect from Becker...great factory edges. I was very impressed as I always have been with Becker. The thing is, Becker doesn't ship the knife in the sheath. it ships in a sleeve, cardboard.

I put the knife in the sheath, I like it. Fits great. Try it out a few times. I notice, "Hey, this knife is not as sharp as I though?!?!" Oh well. I sharpen it. "There". Put it back in the Sheath and it's dull again!!! Turns out this is the experience of many BK2 owners and nice or not, a lot of people abandon that sheath.

Back to the Gerber LMF. The sheath is so nice right! No I think this is the cause of my problem. I'll bet I can sharpen that thing up and it'll stay sharp!!! IT WAS THE SHEATH!!!

In regard to the Gerber LMF, does this ring true for anybody? My sheath is the Molle compatible that had the pull through carbide sharpener built in.

Thanks. QB

I have a couple of fixed blades that do this. I wouldn't say they get dull, but the definitely are hitting the inside of the sheath, distorting the edge slightly. It's just seems to be part of owning some fixed blades. You could always get some kind of custom kydex or leather that doesn't rub, or rub as much.

Pull through carbide sharpeners are the devil's way of saying he doesn't like sharp knives.

Kydex sheaths aren't bad but FRN are fiberglas reinforced nylon, and will abrade a sharp edge. Even kydex will trap grit and work on your blade like sandpaper. (Rinse periodically.)

Oh gosh yes. I NEVER use the pull through...just trying it date the piece. I will be making some leather for this or have some kydex done. I don't care about scratches as long as the edge is not damaged.

Yes the lmf2 sheath does dull the knife just like the bk2 sheath. I could get my lmf2 hair popping sharp when I had it, but with a few in and out of the sheath was back to barely a working edge.

I knew it! (he says in his best Chandler Bing voice). Thanks Bobby. I honestly thought something was wrong with me!

I can also tell you with use the lmf2 doesn't hold an edge well either. The blade geometry on that knife just plain sucked, add that in with a dulling sheath and it's enough to drive one crazy lol. I ended up just throwing mine in my truck as a shtf emergency knife until I sold it.

I get all my Sheath Knives ~ Custom Sheaths because I do like Custom Leather as there is so much they can do with the Leather ( over a half a dozen things I can think of as I am hitting the Keys !* ) Oh well.
