Sad news -- have to sell my silver Garud AK

I just made a drastic life decision today and quit my job. Between work and grad school and the various other things I'm involved in, I had been getting only about 3 hrs. of sleep a night, and I knew something had to give.

I knew that if I gave up on my classes, it would be another 2 years before the same classes would come around again, meaning that by the time I graduated I'd already be 30. I just couldn't wait that long. My job as a schoolteacher, on the other hand, was not advancing me toward my career goals or any other lifelong goals, and was a source of alot of stress which was filtering into all aspects of my life.

I've had some kind of illness for the past few weeks. (Those of you at the convention will remember I was already getting sick then.) Just this past February, a similar illness landed me in the hospital for nearly two weeks. It was the same thing -- stress from teaching, which was causing me to fall behind in my courses, which bred more stress, etc. I was afraid that the same thing might happen again, and wanted to avoid that unpleasant experience.

The problem is, I still need money, and more particularly, I need to pay for a conference I'm supposed to be presenting some research at --in South Africa! So I'm having to thin out my weapon collection, and the Garud AK will be one of the ones to go -- not because I don't like it, but because I know I'll be able to replace it at some later time.

If anyone's interested, please contact me at ruelm@hotmail.com . Like the title said, it's just like the Garud Ang Khola in the HI Smoothsale site pictures, but with silver instead of brass mounts. The blade had been used, so there is one tiny nick and some stuff that needs cleaning off to be brought back to mint condition. I was looking for around $175, but I'm negotiable.

Sorry to clog up the board with this, but I want to get an emergency cash fund established as soon as possible, in case I need it in the near future.

I'm not in the market, but one of the other guys may be able to help you out.
And I most certainly understand what it's like to be sick and have stress multiply it. I can really sympathize with you although I know it doesn't help your condition.

I really hate to hear about your problems.:( And if you decide to get rid of some of the rest of your collection drop me an e-mail.
I may not be able to afford anything else, but I may be able to help, sure wouldn't hurt too look.
I'll tell you what I would do since you're not only a fellow H.I. Forumite, but a helluva nice youngster, if I do get something in your collection I would let you have it back at a future date for the same price if you get back in a position that you would want it back.
Can't beat a deal like that.

Thanks, Yvsa. You're a true gentleman, even if I don't feel much like a "youngster" anymore!

I'll email you some pix of that Yataghan I brought up to the Khonvention, since I think that'll be one to go. Or, you can find it on this page I'm building to show my stuff for sale -- as you can see, I quit before securing all my financial obligations, but oh well! It had to be done.

Ruel e-mail has been sent asking for more info on some of your
blades.
I thought about trying to trade you out of that Yataghan while y'all were here, but after some soul searching it just didn't really turn me on although it is an excellent piece of art from the past.
The coral on those old blades of any sort was often hard won from the grasp of the sea.
Many men died trying to harvest it as that was in the days before any easy access to diving equipment, and when it was available it was the old hard suits, as SCUBA came along quite a bit later.

Oh, and anyone under 35 is a youngster to me and it's not all just my age, but the hard miles as well.;)
It feels sometimes like I have been overhauled and rebuilt as many times as the Mercedes I once read about, several years ago, in Alaska that had over 3,500,000 miles on it. ;)

Ruel and I drove to the convention together.
HE HAS GREAT STUFF! I was personally amaized at his collection of Phillipine weaponry.
If I had money I know I would be trying to get my hands on some of his weaponry.

Ruel,
Sorry to hear about your illness, I hope you get better soon. I will spread the word the best I can about your sales. Good luck with your studies and your presentation.

Ruel,

I wish I could help out. Those are some nice pieces... and I'd love to get the Guard :(

You made the right decision... I was in a similar position trying to work 5 jobs and go to school too. Almost all of those jobs equated to full-time positions, so sleep was a rare pastime... it didn't end well...

I have now cut down on everything I'm trying to do... and have dropped out of school until I can drive a stake through this studio business. You can always make things up... or purchase new stuff... if you get your health messed up, you might not get it back 100%.

Life is short.. make time to smell the roses ...or chop them down :D

Good luck to you....

Alan

Thanks everyone. I've had a very relaxed weekend for the first time in a very long time, not having to worry about meeting work deadlines. On the other hand, I'm gonna have to start pounding the pavement for a new, easier job on Monday. But at least in the meantime I'll be able to catch up with my classes and hopefully get healthier.

I did do something this weekend that I haven't been able to do, and which is absolutely necessary to my sanity -- sit down and read a book for pleasure. Just an hour a day of reading can make all the difference in the world. I finished off a book I had started in the summer ("The Philippine War 1899-1902") and started a new one, one that everyone here would probably like: "The Soldier Sahibs: The Daring Adventurers who Tamed British India's Northwest Frontier."

Again, thanks to everyone, and if you're looking for a Garud, I'm you're man! ;)
