Good Day,

It seems that the Norlund name is back.

But, so far as I can tell, the axes suck.

Poor grain handle.

Horribly over-shellacked.

Heavy Brush finish, with forging visible underneath.

Some Orange coating over the top.

Badly done edges.

Now, I have not tested one, but the indications are not good. If someone wants to give one a run through, I might be willing to supply one of their hatchets(might because I forget how much they were asking for them).

That's about the state of affairs with many brands. I just have one old Norlund hatchet head and it's pretty decent. Luckily there are quite a few old Norlunds for sale still.

California. Though where in the state I do not remember.

From the label, I gathered that the name was bought.

If it is of more interest, I can get more details next time I see them.

I may be willing to test one of the new ones if you'd like to supply one. I'm getting a couple old Norlunds off eBay to try some different profiles on. When they get here I can test them against the new one. (or rather- vice versa).
I'll also be conducting a test of a small hunter Wetterling that I've been talking to Jimbo About. I think we're going to throw a long handle on it. It's a 1 1/4 lb head right now and too heavy unless you choke up on it's 12" handle some.
Let me know.

Hi,

This my first post.
I have an old (1979) Norlund "Camper" 3/4 size axe. The handle will need replacing soon as it is starting to split. Love this old axe, it's the second one I've owned. All of the handles I've seen in the stores have a curved handle and would require a lot of work to modify...Anyone know of a source for these handles?

Thanks,
Frank

P.S. My primary hunting knife is a 5" Randall model 3 made in 1968. After it was on order for a few months I was in Orlando one Saturday and called the shop. Bo randall answered and invited me over. He was very nice and gave me a tour of his pocket knife collection. He had several mod. 3's in the show case, so i picked one out. It still took a few weeks to get it as my wife had ordered it with my name engraved on it. Total cost?...$45.00 Ah, the good old days.
I do like good tools!

I have done some business with these guys, They make many levels of quality handles. Th BR grade with tinted finish are best. Should'nt cost more than a few bucks, accept if the order is under $200.00(which it will be) they tack on a $20.00 processing fee. Their website is www.vbmfg.com and the person I was using as contact is below. You may want to take a pic of your existing handle with a ruler as scale and get it to him to confirm size and shape.
