We lost one of the greats. Phill was one of the originators of the American style Japanese blade. All of his knives were made for hard use. However, he will be remembered even more for being a gentelman and a wonderful human being. He was a joy to talk to at any show and seeing him was always a highlight. Condolences to Pat, Phill Jr. and all the rest of the family.

Godspeed, Phil.

I just got in and I had an email from Pat

To say I am sad is a huge understatement

I am crushed

I walked into Phill and Pats shop over 20 years ago

I had always dreamed of owning one of his swords but at that time could of never afforded it

He was gracious and warm and spent a whole afternoon talking and even measureing me up for that someday dream sword.

At the end of that visit he reached into his counter and pulled out a knife that was not for sale and asked if I would like it for a very resonable price

I still own that knife and just sent it back to Phill a few months ago for a new sheath.

Over the next 20 years a very warm and loving friendship grew. In my early years I went thru some difficult times all self imposed but none the less Phill always was there to talk and be a friend we ended our conversations with an I love you and and a talk to you soon.

Phill not only gave a huge part of himself to the knife world he gave a huge part of himself to all his friends and family and will not only be rememberd for what he did in the cutlery world but for what he did in the world. I know he helped a screwed up angry kid see a kinder more careing world and for that I will always owe him a debt I can never repay.

Phill believed he put a little bit of himself in every blade . I would like to believe that because I know he put a little bit of good in everyones life who had the good fortune to know him

I am glade I spoke to him a week or so ago

Rest in Peace dear friend you will be missed

My prayers and condolences for his family and friends.

Even though I never met him in person, I did have a few phone conversations with him and it was always a genuine pleasure to talk with him.

Rest in peace, Phil.:(

Aw man, he truly was a legend. It's been a bad couple years for our community.
