I received this as a forward from the dealer Paul Schlinder who received it from Ed Wormser last night.

Bill Moran was diagnosed with lung cancer.

This is all the email contained.

Our prayers go out to him.

:( for those who have not had the chance to meet him, we may never see as much time and effort given to knifemaking by one person. For those who have had the chance words, at least for me, can not express the genuine love Bill has for knifemaking and all the people involved.

Damn, I hate to hear that. I always wondered about forgers breathing all the fumes and bad stuff floating around in the air when their making blades. Bill Moran has been forging for a long time.

Well said, Gus.

I am so sorry to hear that!! My prayers and good thoughts are with him and his family.

:( I was having a pretty good day till now. I think I'll just turn this thing off ... Hard to type with tears in your eyes....Damn, I hate news like this.

While it may be true that Bill Moran has been diagnosed with lung cancer, he is very much alive! In fact you can visit with him and tour his shop in Frederick, MD in just three weeks (Oct. 7-9). Here's a link to the event information: http://www.americanbladesmith.com/pdf/Moran Hammer In 2005.pdf
Here's a recent picture of Bill at work in his shop:

This truely is some very disturbing news. He is one of the greatest knifemakers and teachers. He is one of the most humble individuals I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. My prayers and thoughts go out to him and his family. This photo is one I will always cherish. The chance to meet a legend in the world of knives.

Wow... that's sad. I'm glad he's still alive, and I hope he stays kicking for a while yet. Cancer doesn't always win! So keep praying...

Bill Moran´s efforts changed the face of the knifemaking world forever and it is sad to hear these news.
I have had the chance of meeting him - and also his wife, that was a great person, too - at the Blade Show and even though he was always busy, he seemed to always find a few moments for some good conversation.
My best wishes of recovery to him.
