Just wanted to share an old 6217 knife that I've carred since 1973. Used on a diary farm for about 12 years, castrating, cuting thousands of bales of hay, and every thing else associated in farming. Then in the construction industry for about another 20 years that I owned, used for sharpening pencils, cutting out window and door openings, and every thing else.
Finally broke the blade a couple of days ago, and had to pull out the new one that I bought the same time. Old one is a 8 dot, new one is a 7 dot. You can still see the price I paid for them at the time. Notice how much the scales are worn down, as well as the blades. I really loved that knife, but in the last years it developed a lot of wobble in the large blade. You just can't admagin how much that knife hase been used.

The Old Tree brand knife was bought in 1969 at a local Hardware store, and used mostly on weekends, but has been sharpened a lot!

Let's see any of your old knives that are pretty worn out and see what you've replaced them with. I put this in the traditional folder forum, because back then there were not many lockbacks..

Regards,
John

Looks like a happy well used knife. Heres to the next one lasting 40 years.

None of my knives are ever gonna look like that I have too many to wear 'em down significantly. I can't believe it took you 32 years to break out the replacement!:D

Very impressive! Just shows that quality endures. It is nice to retire a wonderful knife like that but to have a quality replacement for it is really outstanding.

Scooter, this is one of the best posts I've read in a long time! Seeing your well-used blades is the reason I read BFC!

Thank you very much for sharing pictures of your beloved knives.

scooter... what a journey that knife has been on with you!, great post, and I totally agree with the guys above...I wont ever get to wear my knives down like that, and it goes with a fairly recent post on these forums about only ever having one knife!
Thank you for sharing, I havent seen too many Bokers with the twin shields on the scale? ( or is that just me? )

seems almost a shame not to send that old workhorse to a knifesmith and get a replacement blade put in.

Gentlemen,
Thanks so much for the many kind words. I do have many other knives, somewhat collecting them for the last 40+ years, probalbly well over 200, so that's not my only 2 knives. With that said, I just never saw a reason to switch knives, as that knife did every thing that I ever asked of it, (except pry the bolt loose when I broke the blade).

I did call Case Customer Service to see the possibility of getting it refurbished, and told them that I didn't expect any warrenty, and told them I would be happy to pay for any charges it would take to put a new blade in, and tighten it up, and that I would like to still keep the large blade intact, but they advised that their tooling had long since changed, and that they would not be able to fix it at all. They were very nice I must add, and very helpfull. The next day , I got to thinking, im glad that they told me that, that the knife had served me well, and it was time to give it a rest and go into retirement. So it will sit on my shelf in my safe for the remainder of my time, and will NEVER be sold.

This is such a great forum, and I just found it a couple months ago. So many nice and helpfull people on here, its a pleasure to read every night.

Regards,
John

I'll second that notion! WOW!

Well spoken, Duncan.

John,
I was 12 years old in 1973. I'm 50 now and I can barely even imagine carrying the same knife all that time. So much has happened since then, as your knife clearly displays. I suppose there are plenty of non collectors out there that have carried the same knife for many years but you are the first collector that I have ever heard of doing this for so long. I don't know what to say! To say that my hat is off to you would be an understatement! This is the coolest thing I've ever seen!
Welcome to the forum and thank you for sharing this with us.

Now that is a real pocketworn Case. It has served you well, and the replacement should last just as long.

Wow man, you literally wore the shield right off of that knife. It's great to see that a good old Case knife can make it that long. I too have a drawer full of knives that would jump at the chance to serve me like this one did you, but the truth is, it will probably never happen.

John,
Thank you. For many reasons.
For sharing your story (and the story of your knife) with us.
For reminding us, once more, that a good quality knife, used properly, can last much longer than people usually think.
For the sadness for an old knife retiring, and the emotion of a new one taking its place.
And for reminding me of the few times I saw my grandfather's knife, the most used pocket knife in the world, or so it seemed to me..wish I owned it now.

Guys, you'all don't realize what the kind words have ment to me. Wonderful!!!
Guess I never realized what knives ment. I always thought of a knife being a knife till I made that post yesterday..Got me to thinking about all that knife has done. Old knife back in the farm years got opend maybe 10 to 20 times a day, hardly ever an hour it wasn't opened. It has cut many things, I was thinking about: Cleaned grease off of fittings, cleaned out sawdust, mud off of boots, cut brush, dug holes in the garden, helped the wife peel apples, cut many steakes, cut numerous types of hose, cleaned horses hooves, scraped paint, caulk, cardboard, just goes on and on and on. Believe it or not the knife still has some Snap left.
I can remember changing oil in the tractors, and just droping the knife in the oil to lube it up good, then wiping all the excess off as best as I could, then hell, maybe peel and apple and eat it. Got me thinkin about reading about what type of oil you're suppose to use on the blade to keep it from being contiminated,,(LOL). Hey don't do what I did, it's probably not good for you!!!! Im 58 now, and feeling better than ever, so i'm still kickin.
Again gentlemen, thanks for the wonderful words, and hope that I may be able to help someone here on the forum or be of assistance.
Regards,
John
