The reason behind this post is rather sad but the testing of Busse product was academic at least.
A relative had a whitetail deer farm. Recently State legislation (maybe Federal) was enacted that as of Jan 1st all deer will require a $200 test per deer. I believe this is to test for chronic wasting desease among other things. I have no knowldege of whether this legislation and/or the test is good or bad. What I do know is it put my relative and about 400 other Ohio deer farmers out of business. Because the market was flooded with people trying to sell, even nice 10 point bucks would not sell let alone the does. As luck would have it, my county in Ohio recently got a Chapter of Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry http://www.fhfh.org/Home.asp an organization that I really like and support. . My relative had never heard of them and I asked him to call. It turns out that they had sufficient donations to pay for the butchering of all the deer that he was willing to donate.
In Ohio for years we were only allowed 1 deer a year, recently we have been allowed more. I usually only get one a year though so my knives do not get much use field dressing. So although it was sad to slaughter all of these deer, I tried to focus on all the hungry children who would get meat and on knife testing.
First day I got there late due to Christmas at the inlaws. I was only able to field dress 4 deer with my Anorexic Basic 4 but I went through the rib cage of two of them as well. I did no stropping or "steeling" and the point seemed to be a little less sharp when finishing the 4th one. I went home and stropped the edge 5 times on green compound and it was razor sharp again. (Oh yeah by the way...the legendary BEEF did put the original edge on this.)
Day two I field dressed 7 deer. I used my saw to go through the ribs and did not touch up the edge at all. Once again the first 1/4" felt like it was a little dull by the end of the 7th deer. I stropped it 10 times on green rouge and it was shaving sharp again.
So in the end it was a dirty, depressing job. I did not even field dress half of the total he dnated. However, I did get to prove to my satisfaction that Busse INFI is FREAKING AWESOME!! once again.
I encourage you to check out FHFH in your area as they are always looking for deer or $ to cover butchering fees.
Happy New Year!
