I should probably just keep quiet because I'm not 100% sure and have been too lazy (or maybe just want to be blissfully ignorant) to read up on the laws, but... from what I understand, there are not any restrictions on folder blade sizes. I don't believe there are any restrictions on fixed blade sizes either just as long as they (the fixed blades) are not concealed. Mike

Technically.... 3" blade for folder is the limit for LA county, so it depends on where you are visiting in California. I say "technically" because as long as you are an upstanding citizen the police will not hassle you over carrying a knife that has say.... a 3.5" blade. If for whatever reason they happen to get a hold of your knife.... they most likely won't take out a ruler and measure it.

What is so sad about visiting the Golden State? Stereotypical madness.

There's no limit on length. No autos. And can't conceal a fixed blade.

You can wear a samarai sword if you wish. Just as long as its in plain sight

My suggestion- browse through the titles in this sub-forum and read the threads pertaining to California.

As far as blade length limits, some cities/counties in California have them, and some don't. Like I said, read the other threads to learn more.

Pretty much there is no reatriction on size unless you are in LA county, Oakland, or San Francisco. The size limit for those places is i believe 3 inches if i remember correctly. Fixed blade wise just have the handle visable and you are good to go, if its not visable its a felony. Ive talked to a few cops before and off the bat they believe an A/O knife is a switchblade. Pretty much any knife except an auto knife is perfectly fine in most of the state. Yep as stated you can carry a katana if you wish, my favorite saying is a cavalry saber (sounds cooler to me.) Here in santa clara county i never ran into sheeple scared of a "big tactical blade" so you should be good if you are in these parts. Where do you plan on visiting?

I went, I am home, I am back were it is safe. San Diego was my destination. Ninth Avenue & Broadway area was my destination. Bad part of town, over rain with homeless.

Was only in San Diego 6 or 8 hours, place has gone to shit.

Doubt the "over rain"; we're in the midst of a drought. ;)

San Francisco only has a 3" blade law for places that serve alcohol, and "places of recreation." For the latter, I figure it's generally tourist areas, parks, malls. But the language is vague enough that I'm sure it's open to the interpretation of the LEO. Just don't be a dick, I guess. And that's just a pretty good social rule in general. For autos, the blade has to be under 2". They're even often called "California legal" autos. Microtech's UTX-70 with a sub-2" blade says "UTX-70 CA" on it.

As far as the political comments, I understand if you don't like the way things are run in this area. I grew up out here and live in SF, and I gotta say other than the weather, it can be pretty damn awesome for some. The fact is, there are moronic laws and politicians in every state (http://www.dumblaws.com/), and dumb people allowing all that stupidity to persist indefinitely. But generalizing how horrible it must be out here seems to me to be a bit ignorant. Sure, different areas are better for different things. If you enjoy having the ability to shoot your gun in your backyard for target practice, hey, (most of) CA clearly isn't the place for you. And sure, there's always room for improvement. But maybe it's possible that there are smart, good people who have other things to do out here that they genuinely enjoy(?). Maybe there's a reason why San Francisco is consistently rated as one of the top places to visit in the world. As unfathomable as it may be, some people genuinely enjoy being in metro areas. More people and a fairly strong local economy makes for all kinds of fun stuff to do out here.

There's a good reason to presume that most people in small towns aren't evolution-denying, irrationally paranoid, uneducated hillbillies. Maybe there are people in metro areas who aren't so stupid either.

Well put. Thank you. Mike

As far as state law, you can carry a sword openly or conceal/ open carry a Cold Steel XL Espada. If I recall correctly, you can't do that in Texas.

^This. Counties and cities can have their own restrictions, but state law is pretty lenient. Oh, also no "gravity operated" knives such as balis. Brass knuckles are illegal statewide, so no trench knives. In a lot of the bay area people think that if the blade is longer than the width of your palm it isn't legal, I've even seen cops measure blades like that, but I haven't seen anything like that in the penal codes I've read.

Here's my alameda county specials.

Autos, butterfly knives with blades under 2" are legal in CA.
