Well friends,

About two weeks ago I forgot to take my old timer minuteman out of my pocket and it ended up going thru the wash. My Daughter pulled it out but did not know enough to dry it right away or let me know so I could oil it. So now I have a spotty blade with some piting :(

Can anyone give any suggestions as to what I can use to lessen the staining. I have a dremmel with a buffing wheel do you think some jewelers rouge would do the trick? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I know that it is only a $13.00 knife but I have had it for a while and would like to see if I can clean it up (At least some :)

I'd strop it on some fine grit sand paper and then buff it with the jeweler's rouge.

Edited to add...

One thing you also might do is give the blades a soak in vinegar to give them all a uniform dark patina. This would mask the "spots" and give the added benefit of a little corrosion resistance.

If you don't have anything else, you can use toothpaste. Works a bit slow, but I'm sure you will get excellent results with it. As Coonskinner mentioned, a patina would help to stop rusting. I think the minuteman is a great knife.

I agree. I like my little minuteman. It has served me well. That is why I am trying to save it. :) I will try the tooth paste polish followed by the vinegar dip and then maybe a quick touch up of the edge. I will let you know how it turns out.

Thanks guys!

brasso with a soft cloth works also. If its in there pretty good try a buffing wheel on your dremel soaked in water, rouge and brasso. If the pitting is still there than you may want blue, or stain the rest of the blade.

Use the Dremel with jeweler's rouge or a steel rouge that you can get at any hardware storel. This will polish it to a very high gloss. Then check out my post above about Home Bluing. This should prevent any spots or rust in the future. Plus it looks Bitchin'

Thanks Lenny,

I will have to give it a try. Had a funeral to go to so I did not get to the knife yet but after Christmas I will have to give the Lemon juice a try. I also have to stop by the store and pick up some rouge.

Hi Guys,

I used my dremel and some rubbing compound to clean the blade and then dunked it in a bowl of ~50% lemon juice for about 4 hrs. and now it has blades that are very dark. I appreciate the info on this method. Now I shall place the Minuteman back in service as my Aux EDC.

Merry Christmas all!!
