I have a triangular diamond coated needle file. I would like make on of the sides a safe side. What would be the best way of stripping the coating/diamonds off of one edge.

Fine-grit belt on your grinder? I would start with a worn belt, I imagine the diamonds would knock off the sharp grit of a new belt pretty quickly. Just thinking out loud.

Maybe not a fine -grit belt . Coarse diamonds on a new sharpener are fairly easy to tear off using high pressure . A coarser belt might work better.
Another way would be to put tape over the surface.

Tape is the hot ticket, thanks for your guidance . FYI ceramic abrasives coarse or fine will not touch it. A grinding wheel wont touch it either, (I was surprised how well I could dress the wheel with a needle file).
