Where things may not be quite what they appear to be;
Has left me wondering if my cold steel safe keeper 2
Is a genuine article.
I know the first ones were Japanese made
And then Taiwanese came later
But I have a stainless steel satin wire brushed finished version
(its not bead blasted)
With the markings..
COLD STEEL
CHINA
Ouestion is in which year were these made?
And If indeed its kosher??!
Thanks in advance!

Maybe not such a good thing to say
But dang!
They're good.
Sure had me fooled.
Until i spotted CHINA
Thanks for the reply...

Sometimes the cold steel catalog archives
https://www.coldsteel.com/catalog_archives
http://www.who-sells-it.com/cy/cold-steel-5228/knives-2007-28996/page-30.html
Does wonders to unearth past mysteries.
The safe keeper 2 in 420 sub quenched ss
(Product code "#12BT")
went missing a couple of years
(the earlier japanese made product code was "#12B")
After the newer safe maker push daggers were introduced.
Then listed on page 30 of the 2007 CS catalog
Was the reintroduction of the safe keeper series
in the german 4116 krupp stainless steel.
(Product code "#39LSKB")
Which just so happens to be a steel type used
For some Chinese kitchen cutlery.
So there you have it
On that one fateful year of 2007,
the "made in China" Safe Keeper had made its debut.
Until it too was discontinued
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/532543-Cold-Steel-discontinued-UWK-Kobun-ect?
and replace by the taiwanese
Aus8 version that is still presently in service
(Product code "12BT")

At the time of this writing.
Mystery solved.

Never saw one stamped China .. and I'm a dealer. Taiwanese AUS8s are good knives.

I completely missed that they came back for one year in 2007 after stopping in 2005 and starting again in 2010...I have updated the CS Push Knives History over on the CS Forum

Actually Page 30 of the 2007 CS catalog is the VG1 San Mai Ghurka Kukri.
The Safe Keepers are on page 58 and the text does state;
" They’re all made from sub zero quenched 4116 Krupp stainless steel and feature Secure-Ex® sheath"
But we know CS used 4116 on a number of Taiwan manufactured models. How can you be certain that
the 2007 Safe Keepers were made in China?

Would really need the CS Mod or an auth CS dealer of long standing to confirm it.
But definitely agree that all indications "suggest" that they were made in China at the time.
