Greetings to the distinguished community. I'm new, and I do not speak English well, so please do not swear if I placed it in the wrong section.
Help determine the authenticity of Safe Keeper II.
Confused:
1) The inscription TAIWAN is offset from the center to the left.
2) One descent wider than the other.
3) The knife dangles and rattles in the sheath.

Thank you in advance.

It looks like the markings on both sides are off center, not just the Taiwan part, so it may be that whatever jig they put it in at the factory to do the markings was offset for some reason. But the markings look legit, as does the rest of the knife and sheath. Can't be 100% sure, but in my opinion it is legit. Not sure what is meant by "One descent wider than the other."

I believe mine are all made in Japan but I will check them out this weekend just in case. I did find this image on and it looks like yours, so there is at least two out there. Maybe an early production after changing to Taiwan, doesn't look to great to me and doesn't look up to Cold Steels usual quality. Then again maybe that is the new norm.cold-steel-safe-keeper-2-12bt.jpg

Might be a factory second . If so it should be marked with the numeral "2" . Usually on the base of the handle . A second is still supposed to have the proper heat treat etc and be fully functional .

I've had mine for about a year. The markings are centered, but it does rattle a small amount in the sheath. I checked a few other sites and the markings look the same as yours (like the one from BladeHQ nephron posted), so I guess that's just how the latest versions are. I don't believe yours is fake, though I can't say 100%.

Unless I got a really great discount , I'd be sending that one back , fake or no ! That thing should have never left the factory except as a second . Poor QC . I expect better from Cold Steel .:thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

Everything looks legitimate to me. The company logo is the old one, so I think nephron is correct and there were some quality control issues during the early transition of some knives from Japanese manufacture to Taiwanese (though I have a few Japanese-made models from just prior to the move that are no great shakes, either--contrary to popular belief, not every Japanese knife is a masterpiece!).

While it doesn't mean that they don't exist, I don't know of any counterfeits of the Safe Keeper II. I've never seen any Seconds offered of that model. Despite the small inconsistencies, I think you got a great deal on a genuine knife!

Maybe it looks worse on OP's enlarged pics than it is in real life . I never seen a clone of any CS push knife , either . Might as well enjoy it . Probably stabs just as good as a prettier one . :)

Yes, it is Urban Pal. Real nad Fake.

It is pretty hard to tell from uneven grinds. (Uneven descents as you called it) Even very expensive knives come with all sorts of uneven grinds, swedges, and bevels.

I will say that if you bought it in a flea market you would be lucky if it was real. I don’t know what country you are from, but flea markets almost always sell fakes so they can make more profit.

Please do not buy from flea markets if you want to be sure you are getting a real knife. You wouldn’t buy medicine from a flea market would you? Would you trust a doctor who was operating out of a flea market?

Sometimes you can find good deals on older knives that people are selling. They are usually the people selling collections of used knives. Those flea market “knife stores” that are selling just knives I would stay away from.

Finally dug them out. Still looking for sheaths though. The lettering is centered and blade looks symmetrical to me on both the satin and polished version of the Taiwanese.
